I'm going to be starting dental school in the summer and just want to start thinking ahead. I don't want to wait till the last minute! I am going to get involved in endo research right away.

I agree with swoops. You need to focus on your new board exam (ADAT) and keep you class rank as high as possible

i did a 3 day externship at Penn. I also shadowed at VCU, buffalo, Tufts, and BU. No externships will allow you to do anything hands on by yourself (so basically it is all just shadowing with the possibility of assisting). I also did a 1 week mixed GP/perio/endo externship through Alpha Omega dental fraternity that took place in different private offices.

like other people said, for right now focus on your rank. that can't be stressed enough. however, you can start shadowing private endo's ASAP. a couple hours during breaks or weekends if you can find the time to still be on top of your school work. grades and demonstration of interest are what got me my top choice program.

paid programs will most likely not look at you as a new grad applicant (if you are applying in D4 year). most programs require private practice experience or a GPR. there are select few program directors who outright say they don't care about experience or not- make sure you find out whether the programs you apply to fall under this category before you waste your $150 in application fees. also, some schools favor their own, and have limited spots (so probably also a waste of your money to apply if you are out of state).
