I'm usually busy during the day (MCAT, classes, shadowing, etc.) and don't have much free time other than the evenings. I was wondering if you guys had any places in mind that may need evening volunteers during the weekends? I know animal shelters are always available, but I have hundreds of hours at animal shelters, and would like to mix it up a bit. I'm open to any kind of community service, really. Please let me know if you guys have anything in mind!

Thanks for your response.

I actually have plenty of clinical experience (both paid and volunteer). I was thinking non-clinical related, more along the lines of community service. Sorry if i wasn't clear.

I volunteer at a women's shelter during nights, many different things to do. 24hour calls, response teams. If you are a mister though this might not be the best service. I know also of youth houses for runaway youth/ suicidal programs that need staff 24/7 to work phone hotlines or desks.

I didn't realize EDs had overnight volunteer opportunities. The last shift at my quiet suburban hospital was 4-8. I'm guessing the quiet hospitals would be super borning overnight, if they even offer such a shift. Innercity hospitals would probably have neat stuff.

I had the last shift (ending 11pm) and just kinda didn't leave

I was cool with all the staff so it wasn't a big deal.

Homeless shelters are an option.

Some cities have social service providers that make the rounds at night to places where people at risk for HIV due to IV drug use and/or sex work can be found.

Whoa the second option sounds incredibly interesting. Who exactly do you contact for positions like that?

That could take some digging in your area.

These programs are most common where there are problems with homeless youth who exchange sex for money or drugs. Thre are also some programs that do needle exchange by going to where people who use IV drugs use.

You might have some luck asking the local public health department and/or United Way if they know of any organizations that are doing this sort of outreach in your area.

I volunteer with a "Parent's Night Out" program once a month at center for children with developmental handicaps.

Probably just anecdotal, but it's at night.

This sounds great. I'm definitely going to give this a shot.

No disrespect to any other volunteer opportunities, but I just feel as if volunteering in a nursing home or hospice wouldn't be much of an experience.

The hospital I volunteer at has night positions open. In the ER they offered volunteer shifts from 6-9 and 9-12 at night on weekends and weekdays as well as other units like oncology. Also homeless shelters as already stated are great.

My school has a safe walk program where women can have a buddy walk them places. There is also women's transit that does the same thing but with cars.

Not a bad idea. Did you contact the university PD to get started?

I volunteered at the downtown hospital from 9 to midnight for one semester. I would always get a workout running back from the ED to my car because we couldn't park in the structure so we had to park in the neighboring houses which was very sketchy. I was always sweating by the time I got inside my car.

Thanks! Although I said non-clinical in my original post 😀
