So ever since I was younger, due to the lack of education in my family, I didnt know anything about college until my second semester in Community College. I always had this perception that every doctor got straight A's from Kindergarden and all the way through their Ivy league college education from whence they recieved their Phd's! (Yes i thought all physicians had Phds).

In highschool I had NO IDEA what I was going to do. I was the absolute class clown- total goober. I got a decent GPA, but it was only because my schedule included two TA periods, two welding periods, english, econ, and an athletic period. No one expected ANYTHING from me. First couple of semesters in community, mediocre grades; 2.80ish. Now, after finding out I want to do medicine, my GPA has been a 3.92.

I think it's funny, granted Im not in medical school so i truely havent accomplished anything big, but its nice to hear people say they're shocked and amazed when I tell them I'm pre-med.

I grew up as a big computer nerd - learned how to program when I was like 5...went through high school not caring about science, english etc and just skated by always knowing that I had an easy path in computers...graduated with like a 2.5 GPA. Got to junior college and took my first two computer programming classes and completed them in a week (both classes just had a packet describing programs we had to write throughout the semester in Fortran and Basic...wrote them in a day and turned them in)...realized how boring pursuing the degree was going to be for me, so the next semester I picked a bunch of random courses, one of which was an intro chemistry course...did terrible, struggled like crazy to pull a C, but absolutely loved it...slowly learned how to study (never did in HS) and ended up being split between pursuing a PhD or MD/DO...did my masters and decided medicine was the path I wanted after all.

I was a terrible student until I got motivated to pursue medicine..

This is what I like to hear! Very inspiring

Graduated high school being a goof like yourself and had like a 3.0 GPA with my parents constantly being on my ass about school. Got into a sub-par university and first semester was a transition period for me, but without all the parental pressure had a 3.43, but after realizing I want to do medicine this semester I was able to pull off a 3.9

Nice! Sounds like me without the hounding! Is your cGPA a 3.9? or is the your GPA of when you started your medicine journey?

I forgot to mention this, I have no idea how I did...I was actually set to go to DeVry "University". Yup, the "advisor" that came to my school fooled me, and my mother into enrolling. Neither of us had ANY idea what college was about, my mother is a waitress, and this sounded good to us. But, at the last second i backed out and enrolled in a Community College the following semester.

In high school, I was the guy with who never did his homework and didn't studied for tests. Instead I chose to hang out with my girlfriend and play world of warcraft all day. Then I went to Chapman university, quit video games and decided that I wanted to actually do something with the potential I knew I had. I now have a 3.95 GPA and have been accepted as a transfer to Berkeley! I also wanted to prove to those overachieving elitist *******s that went to the ivy leagues that they weren't anything special. When I get accepted to an awesome medical school, my work will be complete.

I was a level 300 medic in world of warcraft

I was a level 300 medic in world of warcraft

I was a guild leader and also leveled a guy to 70 when the first expansion came out.

You kiddin' me? My girlfriend wasn't the only one with 34 C's in high school, 'know what I'm sayin'?

I got a mix of Cs and Fs in high school (with an A in band!) and dropped out just before the end of my junior year. I took the GED and spent the next 12 years roaming around the country sort of aimlessly, looking for True Love or what have you. I went back to community college in 2008 and chipped away at it while I was working. Then I found True Love by accident (ain't that always the way) and moved across the country and started going to school full time.

I never really conceived up until that point that medicine was even an option for me. I mean, a high school dropout with no money? But that community college encouraged me so hard, all the professors there told me I had what it took and I should go for it. So I transferred to 4-year college, and now I'm going for it. 3.9 since I changed my track, and I've really never been happier.

It's the GPA when I decided I want to do medicine. cGPA is 3.6, but hopefully that will change in the future

Ya I feel ya brother. My GPA since declaring premed is a 3.92. But unfortunately my cGPA is ~3.50.

Congratulations guys! I like this thread.

My story is summarized on my MDapps. I hope it is encouraging and helps you all along. Late bloomers can still shine 🙂. Good luck! PM me anytime for moral support.

i barely graduated high school because i had so many absences and never did work. my grades were from 50s to 100s cause of natural talents in languages (seriously, my only talent lol) that kept me from failing out completely. graduated with a 2.7, ended up at a crappy local state school, transferred to an ivy and here i am. i think most people thought i'd end up in jail or dead by the time i turned 20 haha but.. yay happy endings!

Well... long story short... was a straight A student, burned out, skipped senior year (almost didn't graduate), spent many hours lying down in a park staring at the sky pondering life and my own failures and why I was throwing my future away... went to find religion, started with Christianity, dropped that, went Buddhist, became a vegetarian, cut off most of my hair and decided that it was time to become the person I wanted to be by making something out of myself...

ended up deciding to be a doctor. (Well any healthcare profession works. If I don't end up in med school I want to go into public health or holistic health.

A few years ago I was the opposite. I wanted to play devil's advocate and become a lawyer that would side with the devil if that meant making big bucks.

Until my Junior year of high school I was an amazing student, but we all know when a junior guy gets his drivers license its time to pick up all the freshman girls 😀. So I slacked off the rest of high school, and graduated with like a 3.3 (thanks to my 2 years of 4.0).

I had always wanted to be a doctor, because I wanted to be like my dad, but I had no motivation to be one. I did terrible my freshman year in all of the classes I took and barely scrapped together a 3.0.

After my freshman year I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and through that whole process I got to see the ins and outs of Oncology and more specifically Pediatric Oncology. I saw doctors that made a difference in patients lives and I realized that I now had motivation. Ever since then I have been doing 10x better in school, and truly want to become a doctor.
