Hi guys, I am a new poster to sdn. I also don't know much about medical school applications and you guys seem like experts in pre-med stuff.

I was wondering if you guys could tell me where I stand gpa wise. I just finished my freshman year at Vanderbilt University in TN. I am also a Texas resident, so I have 2 seperate gpas ( I think, because Texas Medical Schools use A = 90+ 4.0; B = 80+ 3.0; etc, while AMCAS uses the A = 93+ = 4.0; A- = 90-93 =3.7; B+ = 87-89 =3.3). My AMCAS overall gpa, which is the same as my Vandy gpa is a 3.68, while my science AMCAS gpa is a 3.43. MY Texas Medical School Overall Gpa is a 3.75, while my Texas Medical School Science gpa is a 3.5.......I was wondering if you guys can tell me where I stand with my gpa. Do I need to really improve my science gpa? Is my gpa considered low? I plan on majoring in journalism and philosophy, as a result I won't be taking any upper level science classes, only the prereqs. Freshman year I finished up Bio and Chem. Next year I am taking Orgo/Physics.

Thanks for the help guys

What kind of science gpa is considered the average of accepted students?
Does going to Vandy help me at all, gpa wise? In other words, will medical schools forgive a slightly low gpa from Vandy?

do u think medical schools will take into account vandy's pre-med rigor? the pre-req's at my school are brutal, they are meant to weed kids out. We lose 30 percent of our potential pre-meds in the first year alone.🙁

Just about every undergrad in the country has huge pre-med attrition in the first year. Schools cut almost no slack for "rigor of program." Don't expect any leeway! That being said, you're not in bad shape, especially if I understand correctly and you're just finishing your freshman year. You have plenty of time to pull up your science GPA before any "lowness" becomes an issue.
