Cerumen ("earwax") is made from the cells of the ear canal and consists of secretions from both sebaceous and apocrine sweat glands, combining to form the well-known oily waxy substance. It consists mainly of things like cholesterol, fatty acids, and squalene, and helps to keep out moisture and gather dust and foreign debris which is then conveyor-belted out of the ear canal. Cerumen is also mildly acidic and contains a substance with anti microbial properties called "lysozyme", both of which help to limit bacterial growth. I think most people believe earwax is useless!
