Hello,

I am curious to where previous Pod students have lived while attending externships in different locations??? Do people rent apartments for one month, or just stay weekly at a motel 6???? I recently contacted an extended stay up in Minneapolis, and they told me $2100/ month. What are less expensive ways to do this?

Additionally, would it be better to stay in one location longer to see 2 consecutive programs in that area? Or does it not make much of a difference?

Thanks for your input

Are externships only done in 4th year? Do all schools do them for the same number of months?

Most of the programs I attended had some student housing arranged (but some were kind of seedy). I found some short-term apartments too.

Some programs provide free or cheap housing. Sometimes it's an apartment, a townhouse, etc that they rent out for visiting students. Other times it's just an on-call room in the hospital or a student dorm. Either way, be VERY thankful (and send them a sincere TY card or at least a smile and handshake) because it really will save you a ton of money in what can be a very expensive 4th year (gas, housing, food, airfares, board exams, residency app fees/hotel/airfare, etc).

If you go to away rotations that don't offer housing, I'd call the program secretary and ask for the phone number of a resident. Then, ask the resident if any of the residents rent out rooms in their house to students. I got housing at 3 of my 6 away rotation months, and I am renting a room from a program resident at the other 3. Staying with a resident helps you out, and it also gives you a lot of insight to the program since you have someone around who knows a lot about the program and its attendings. What the resident will charge you probably depends on what their rent/mortgage is, but it'll surely be much cheaper than a month long hotel stay.

No... each school gets a different number of programs. A good question to ask while deciding on a pod school is how many elective clerkship months they get BEFORE January interviews (ones during or after interviews are still ok, but they won't help much in terms of getting the program).

Barry has 5 or 6 clerkships before CRIPS depending on whether or not you take a month off; our 4th year is all podiatry. Taking a month off is what most students elect to do because you can then visit multiple programs in that time, study for interviews, relax a bit, or a mix of those things.

I think DMU gets 4-7 (depending on when core is), NYCPM gets 3, and I don't know what other schools get. If you run a search, I think this has been asked before.

Scholl has 5-6 clerkships before CRIPS and 1-2 after CRIPS. Scholl students also do 2-3 clerkships at the end of their 3rd year and a total of 4-5 their 4th year.

Thank you for your advice, I will definately find out what is offered for the extern students.

call the contact number on the AACPM/ CRIPS website then find out how to contact the residents if needed. Ask them where they stayed and what they recommend.

Remember that all the residents have been thru what you are going thru and should be sympathetic. If not - maybe rethink that program.

Forget my hypothetical question. It assumes I can get through school. That's a big assumption considering my precarious situation as of now.
