Hello,
I am a current second-year biomedical sciences student (undergrad). I am struggling to devote myself to clinical experiences, volunteering, and shadowing mainly as I am confused as what to pursue and opportunities here are limited/ very competitive.
So far I have a 3.25 GPA
- 32 hours shadowing a gynecologist (over the summer)
- summer camp counselor job
- founded a club (pre-health org) last year
- I am a student ambassador at my school
- I am also going to start training for becoming a crisis counselor
- My CPR certification has expired
I am looking to gain some certifications over winter break, but I am not sure which ones. If anyone has any ideas on how I can become more involved or any opportunities in NJ I would really appreciate it.

Don't you have a premed advising office at your school? Pretty much every UG in the country has one. If you haven't met with them yet, you really should.

They'll advise you on what you need to be a competitive applicant, and should be able to put you in touch with multiple EC opportunities in your area, matched to your interests. The advice you would get there would be way more specific and useful than anything you could get here, unless you jeopardized your anonymity (not recommended!!!!) and happened to stumble across someone here from your school or local area!! While NJ is one of the smaller states, it's still pretty big!! 🙂

Try to think outside the box a little. Look into clinical employment or volunteering in an outpatient or hospice setting. If you are looking at big hospitals that might be why the opportunities are “competitive”. If you are volunteering there is always a need somewhere. You might just not be looking in the right places.

I can’t say that any certification is required at this point.

Focus on your gpa and don’t stretch yourself too thin . Need be you can take a gap year to pad your experiences but a low gpa requires far more time to correct for. As for what to do this winter, relax, make a bit of money and look for a volunteer opportunity in a field you’re interested in. I chose ems for my breaks but it’s not for everyone, maybe tutoring under privileged kids is or maybe you just want to volunteer in a hospital. Doesn’t matter what it is just do something
