Hey, I'm a student at City University of New York and I'm going to apply for med school this year. The following are my numbers/stats. I'm interested in either infectious disease or orthopedics. I'm also interested to do social medicine work and I have some experience abroad. My career goals are to live a good lifestyle like I'm used to (I'm rich), but to be a leader in medicine and do a lot of public good here and abroad.

My stats:
Anthropology major, chemistry minor
GPA:3.9+
Science GPA: ~3.9
MCAT: 34s
2 years volunteering in an urban high school, helping advise them in getting into college.
1 year of volunteering in the neonatal ICU of a large municipal hospital
A summer shadowing a physiatrist at Hospital for Special Surgery
Study abroad in Italy for photography
Spent a month in India at a village doing a research project on community health in rural third world villages
Will be spending this summer at MGH doing a project on sports medicine.

What do you all think my chances are at a top school? Any advice on where I should apply to reach my goals?

Probably not. He posted the same question in allo, and it was quickly moved to pre-allo. Somewhat frightening, but I believe this is a legitimate person.

OP: If you definitely must be rich, then definitely don't choose infectious diseases. Stick with ortho. Also, go allopathic, please.

man. way to be a decent human being and then make the worst statement in the world. "i want to do social medicine. im rich and im keeping it that way". that does not click. social medicine and $$$ dont really go together. the money is a nice aspect of the job, not the selling point. the selling point, the reason, the crux of all this is that we go into this occupation to HELP people, not our wallets. in general, docs make some serious sacrifices for the occupation. they dont always have a great family life, they dont always have time for other people, they just dont get to do some of the things that other people take for granted (sleeping regularly). It's easy to get carried away thinking about what kind of car we want to drive or how nice of a house we'll have or all that, but at the heart of the matter, we are here to help people to the best of our ability. I wont say 'oh you would do this for free if you loved it', but i will say 'you would do this for enough money to get by if you loved it'. few people would do any job for free, but most people would do something they love if they got by. how do i know? teachers. plain and simple. please think before you speak in the future.

Let me just clarify. I am well off, and I would definately like to continue living the lifestyle that I'm used to. That being said, I am seriously considering a career in social medicine and helping those that are less well off. I'm trying to find a good school that would allow me to reach my goals of serving the community and becoming a leader in medicine. Any constructive advice would be appreciated.

William T. Riker here.

Dude, I suggest the top allopathic schools. Your statistics show you have the intelligence for them. Good luck!

Riker out. 😎

From pre-allo:

We thought we'd give you all one slightly repetitive troll this afternoon. Have fun! Sorry in advance.

Seriously dont know what Divine Furor's problem with me is. I've PMed him and hopefully he'll go away. Any more advice anyone? What I've heard here and in the pre-Allo section has been quite helpful.

Are you posting in pre-osteo because you have a specific interest in osteopathic medicine?
