I have been accepted into the University of Utah and Idaho State. In state tuition at ISU seems very attractive, but I loved the area and school in Utah. Any advice?

honestly, debt is debt at the end of this. how different is the tuition and living expenses at each of these schools? is that difference going to equate to a huge difference in monthly payments after graduation? you need to come to terms with the fact that you WILL be paying off a pretty big chunk of debt after PT school. I think you should think about which program will make you the happiest and the best therapist. that should lead you to the answer pretty quickly 🙂 good luck

I have 8000 in undergrad. The difference, all told between schools would be 50000-60000, with living expenses etc. I know where I want to go, but is that what is best and most important. I figure the difference equates to about 300-400/month on a 30 year plan. What do you think?

if the difference between schools is that significant then it might be worth going to the cheaper school. the difference between the two schools i was considering was so minimal that it really would not have made a large difference in the long run.

I wish the in state tuition at the U was as cheap as the instate tuition at ISU... living expenses in poke are so much lower than SLC. If I were in your shoes, I'd go to ISU (with the sole reason being the expense), but that said it'd be great to have you as a class mate if we both end up deciding on the U. (I'm probably going to side with the cheaper school out of my options... but that should never be the only reason you decide on a program either in my mind) Best advice I've gotten on this, go where you feel you will be most successful and it is the most conducive to your learning.

I feel like I have heard many therapists say "go to the cheap state school." You aren't going to make more money as a therapist because of the school you went to. In the end, you pass the NPTE and you'll get the salary that your setting/location pays.

Think of it like this. Imagine both schools cost the same amount, but one school offers you a $50,000-$60,000 scholarship. It is basically the same thing as your situation. In the end, it's money that you do not have to pay back. That is a TON of money.

That being said, also consider your happiness. If you really would be happier at that school for a few years, and are willing to pay that extra chunk of money for it, then go for it.

No matter what, I guess it comes down to making the decision on your own and doing what your gut tells you. Good Luck!

You haven't said why you prefer Utah over ISU other than you "like" the area and the school. Both programs are accredited and both will prepare you for the boards, so if a couple of years of "like" for Utah are worth the additional $50-60k debt later on, then Utah is your choice. Personally, if I had a choice (and I did not), I would definitely opt for the lower cost program.

It's good to get advice, but in the end it's not about what others think, but how you ultimately feel inside. If you feel good about U of U then go for it. Either way it will work out for you. Congrats on getting the opportunity to even have a choice. Not everyone get's that chance. Good luck!

lol why is this even a challenge to decide?? You have an opportunity to save an incredible amount of money on in state tuition so why look anywhere else? Liked the area around the other school? Cool, move there after graduation or do a clinical there. Is living in the other place worth 50-60k?? I would hope not.

I'm in the same boat. The uncertainty of not knowing what program your going to if really stressful. I was strongly leaning towards the U then I got a scholarship to another program. If I received the scholarship all three years it make the other program 20k less with living expenses factored in. But the scholarship isn't guaranteed, its through a government grant program and this is only the second year that it is place. So they couldn't really tell me the likelihood that I would receive it multiple years.

To further confusion myself I decided to go to the open house for accepted and alternates (I'm on the waitlist) at another program this weekend.

Little bit of advice from my dad is in life you should make a decision and not look back. If you constantly second guess your decisions in life you will never be happy.

good luck with your decision

I bet these people are on the waitlist for Utah. Haha.

I was about to say. If the difference were $10-20k, then maybe go to the OOS school, but living in an area you want is not worth a year's salary in debt. The IS tuition at Idaho State is much more attractive than the campus in Utah.

I'm in the same boat. I got accepted into a out of state school where the price tag is higher and also an in-state institution. However, I am choosing the out of state school. The selling point for me was the entire experience with the faculty, curriculum, and professionalism of the entire program.

At the end of the day, yes, I am going to have more loans and it is going to be harder to pay off; However, I have a plan to pay it off and I would rather go to a school that I will enjoy instead of being miserable at. So my advice to anyone else out there that is having a hard time choosing the right school: Follow your gut feeling. Hope that helps.
