Hi,

I have a BS in Acct/Finance with a 2.8 ogpa, and 2.5 sgpa due to three C's in Genetics, Microbio, and Orgo II, and three D's in Physics 2, Biochemistry, and Cell Bio. These were due to not studying enough and not because of mental state of mind. I will be taking my MCAT's in March, and will be retaking all the D's over the summer.

I was hoping to get into a postbac program (starting next fall) to boost my chances to get into med schools for the class of 2016. I def. want to start school by then, and right now I am looking for ways to maximize my shot at a MD program rather than a DO one.

You won't get into an MD class of 2016 with those stats, even if you got straight As in the postbac, and got a 32 on the MCAT.

You just can't fix the things wrong with your GPA in that period of time. Go look in the Low GPA thread on the most recent page, and look for a user called Isoprop, and look what he/she did. 3 years of GPA3.99 work. And got a DO acceptance.

As I said, read what Isoprop did.

2ish years of undergrad work (probably in the form of a 2nd bachelors degree) taking science classes
1 year of an SMP

And be prepared to apply DO as well

People with low GPAs have to do a lot more than the usual huge amount of work to get into med school.

Just calculated my GPA properly, and here is what we are looking at.

AMCAS - Overall GPA: 2.85, and Science GPA: 2.07. If I took around 21 credits with straight A's (and I know with my past record, that would be a pretty big if), I will be looking at a 3.00 and 2.70.
AACOMAS - If I took 21 credits, including a repeat of few bad grades, then I am looking at Overall GPA: 3.11 and Science GPA: 3.22.

Caribbean is one option. When you say Caribbean - would you say those stats are eligible for St. George? What about the other big ones i.e. Ross and SABA?

Another question regarding AACOMAS grade replacement policy - if I took the same class twice under different class codes, then do they replace both of those grades or only the last one? So #200 becomes #300, but its the same class and they no longer offer 200, does repeating 300 also replace grade in 200?

I have serious doubts that SGU would accept that sGPA or Ross or Saba, but with Caribbean schools you never know. Something you can try if you still want the Caribbean route is Ross MERP as a stepping stone in. I reall don't recommend Caribbean. It's just not worth it.

As long as they have the same title and unit count (or the repeat has a larger unit count than the initial), the last repeat will replace the former's grade. If the titles are vastly different, they may ask for you to prove evidence that they are the same class through the catalog.

BSCI330 repeat will replace BSCI 330. If you wanted to replace BSCI230 you would need to retake BSCI230. That's what grade repeat replacement means, you repeat the class and your new grade replaces the old one.

I can't retake BSCI230 anymore, its no longer offered and is the course equivalent of BSCI330. Understand what I mean?

What are my shots at a DO program with a 3.1/3.1? Which programs?

As I said, if the titles match and the unit count matches, you can replace that one course.

If a class is no longer offered, you can try arguing with an AACOMAS rep and refer him/her to your course catalog. I doubt any Adcom would look very positively towards a class that you've taken 3 times.

wasvsdal - I appreciate its a long road.

But your grades are so bad, that you've got no chance at a US school for 2016, and now that we know you have a sGPA of 2.0 then you've got a slim chance at the big 3 Caribs, but you might have a chance at lesser Caribs.

And CPA will be an interesting EC essentially, not going to help you get into med school unless you had the other grades and things to go with the typically applicant (MD; cGPA 3.65 MCAT 31, tons of ECs, volunteering, medical experience, research)
