I know everybody hates these, but I'm really freaking out about how many secondary applications I'm going to have to fill out, so if somebody could give me advice on schools to apply to, I'd really appreciate it. GPA: 3.34, BCPM: 3.2ish (although both of these will be a bit higher because I retook a class), MCAT: 31R (12PS, 10BS, 9VR). Michigan resident.

After discussing my stats with the DO I shadowed, he suggested the following schools:
AZCOM
CCOM
DMU-COM
KCUMB-COM
LECOM
MSUCOM
NSU-COM
OU-COM
PCOM

Are these good choices? Do I need more schools? Less? I am also applying to MD schools, so I'm trying to shave down my list of schools in both areas, if possible. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Good choices, for the most part. I'd nix OUCOM, though, because it is a state-supported medical school that has an instate preference and it requires a statement of intent in which you commit to practicing in the state of Ohio for five years. Your stats are probably good enough so that you stand a chance at OUCOM (17% of the 2006 entering class was OOS), but you have to be okay with the five year instate practice commitment. I was not.

MSUCOM; You have a great shot...

For the others, I would stick to the private schools. Like MSUCOM, they prefer instate kids. Which isn't good for me since MSUCOM is my top choice...

Thanks for telling me! Man, I would not want to be tied down in a state for 5 years. Especially Ohio... haha. No offense to any Ohio-ers. 😛

Do you have a preferance for area of the country? Do you have an idea if you want to specialize or go PC? Any interest in research while in medical school? From my perspective I would nix OU-COM as spice mentioned as well as LECOM. I applied there (Erie) and after visiting the school I don't really know why I did. Nothing against the school, but the other schools I visited impressed me a lot more. I personally would take LECOM off and replace it with KCOM (however it is a rural setting) since they have a very strong program and have great matchlists.

You really think I have a shot at MSUCOM?! That would be great! Do you know which schools are public or private of the others?

BTW, definitely apply to KCUMB; it is an awesome school. I am biased, however, since I'll be attending there in the fall. I am happy to answer any question you might have about KCUMB, so feel free to PM me.

👍 Great advice. You can also PM with any questions you have. Out of the schools I visited/interviewed at, KCUMB and DMU impressed me the most.

If I was not tied to a state or region & had to do it all over again, I would definitely apply to OSUCOM for one reason: Goljan.

After listening to his lectures while studying for boards, I would do anything to have him as a professor. Absolute genius. I could handle living in Oklahoma if I got to learn from him. I do love DMU's campus & faculty & have had a great 2+ years here, but they can't really compare to Goljan.

You shouldn't apologize for posting a chances thread...personally, I prefer the individual chances threads vs. the ones that have 250+ posts, easier to sort through. I know others would disagree with me here. Anywho, good luck with the process - your MCAT looks good, I'm guessing you get some acceptances!

Thanks, I hope you're right! 🙂 I apologized because I hate when people jump down my throat for asking a question that they feel I could research on my own or something. At least the people in the pre-osteopathic forum are nicer than in the pre-allopathic. I swear, some of the people over there are just so rude. I don't take it personally, because it's just strangers online, but sometimes I get sick of seeing it, you know?

I'm definitely not a huge fan of some of the pre-allo forum posters. Some remind me a lot of those I went to undergrad. with: the gunners/ruin-your-lab-experiment-to-get-ahead and cheating sort. I don't know about you, but between studying for the MCAT/stressing over the applications, it's nice to have a little reassurance/hope by figuring out your chances (I'm always on Mdapplicants.com) and here looking at others' stats like yourself.

You should apply to NYCOM if you don't mind moving to NY. It has great facilities and an awsome match list.
