Hi! I'm trying to figure out what schools and how many I should apply to this upcoming cycle. My weakest area in my application will probably be my GPA. It is very low. I have already completed a postbacc to help but it didn't raise my GPA very much. Anyways, what schools would you suggest that I apply to and how many? I am from California if that makes a difference.

AND

THANK YOU, this process is really difficult and disheartening. I am discouraged but I'm going to keep going but you guys are wonderful and so helpful. Those of you that help on these forums, give advice and well wishes are truly a great representation of what dentistry should be about and I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

How low is very low? For some people that may be in the 2.0-3.0 range, for others it may be the 3.0-3.3ish range. Makes a huge difference. DAT scores? Do you have lots of EC/Research?

Bunch of factors come into play

3.0 low 🙁 I know people say other areas like EC come into play but its just so scary when I'm so below the averages. I do have EC esp regarding dental club activity and having leadership roles ( I also volunteered through those clubs). I've shadowed for 100 hours but I am trying to shadow again so it is more recent and I'm also looking for more volunteer opportunities but its hard finding dental related volunteer activities. Thank you for replying 🙂

If you expect accurate advice on where to apply, we need accurate information about your stats....
Cumulative GPA, Science GPA, DAT scores, letters of rec (strong or weak, from who?), Hours shadowing, hours of research, etc.

More information the better.

AHH 🙁 you are right

undergrad gpa 3.0, postbacc gpa 3.7, overall GPA 3.1, science/BCP 2.9. DAT AA/TS 21

I'm taking 2 classes right now and hope to get it to a 3.0 by summer and will take as many courses as possible over summer too. Such a bummer that postbacc didn't raise it much 🙁

I have a lot of dental club involvement, club founder, vp, president... etc participated in volunteer events through the different clubs a lot of community outreach based events, 100 hours of shadowing but from 2011ish so I'm trying shadow some more and participate in more volunteer activity - a little hard finding dental related volunteer.

I'm planning on getting a committee letter for LOR, and I have no research background 🙁

Postbacc gpa is great. Dat is great. Keep doing well in your summer classes. You should be ok.

Wow I am surprised your postbacc didn't help your GPA very much. I didn't do a postbacc so I am not really sure how admissions looks at the GPA for those who did it.
Your DAT is strong though. I would recommend checking out the guides sticky'd on the top of this forum and apply to those with a lot of OOS seats, and close to your credentials
some that come off the top of my head are like NYU, Tufts, USC, Temple, UDM, and Lecom? Keep up the good work in summer and good luck!

Also, make sure your letters are very strong, and you apply literally on the first day (early June sometime) so have all your materials ready. And a kick-ass personal statement never hurts either!

Don't give up! You have a chance. Keep working on the grades as much as you can, adcom will see the improvements.

I am surprised too lol. I actually expected my GPA to be a lot higher but did the calculation and was thrown off by how low it was. Okay I will apply to those schools. Sorry, what guides are you talking about? I don't see anything above the forum? Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it 🙂

And Thank you to everyone else too🙂

The info is slightly dated and some new schools have opened but the message is the same (most of the school info still holds true), apply to private schools and public schools with some number of OOS students.
