3.7 gpa ~3.7 sci gpa. student-athlete, clinical/shadowing experience, research experience. .... here's the bad news : MCAT... 16M 8VR 5PS 3BS. Where do I apply?? Is there any school that will even accept such a low BS score?? Thanks in advance!

How do you get a 3.7 science GPA and a 3 on BS section... that is the first question that came to my mind and it most probably will be on any school's mind. You really need to retake the MCAT.

Sorry, I know this is a hard time for you but that is going to be hard to avoid.

As was said, there is no way around that 3 in bio. Bio is one of the most important sections, if not the most important.

I'd get ready to take the April test...probably not what you want to hear....

Talk About Murphy

Yep, you gotta retake the MCAT.

I concur with the above.

the PS score is also low. With a 3.7 science GPA but low scores on both PS and BS, schools will wonder if you have the ability to retain information (or were the classes simply too easy in comparison to other schools).

*not implying anything, just speculating on what admission committee members might think when they see the scores

You really need to do some refelcting to find out WHY you scored so low. then, either fix it or move on with a new career.

hmm... as I understand it, BS is the least impt sxn while VR is the most impt (although this is based on the conjectures in the pre-allo forum; maybe DO schools view the indiv mcat sxns differently).

nevertheless, a 3 in BS, I feel, just won't cut it.

If you want my advice, don't apply this year (unless you're a URM 😛). Instead, use this time to study your ass off for the next mcat.

I think you have to really study for the MCAT for next year. When I interviewed at COMP, they questioned my MCAT score. VR7 PS9 BS10 WR L. I am right now finishing Ph.D and I never really got to study for it. They were wondering why the MCAT was so low for someone that was enrolled in a Ph.D program.

I told them that English is my second language, and I still do read a lot slower than average students. So under time pressure was hard for me to finish everything on time. That is my story on low MCAT score.

Why would the verbal be more important than the biology section? Did I miss something?

I have been told that the verbal score correlates well with the board scores. Whether this is entirely true or not, I'm not certain. I did hear this from the medical school.

Because the VR section is designed to measure analytical and reasoning skills without regard to subject knowledge level.

There is also a correlation with board scores, but as you know, correlations do not necessarily indicate a true relationship.

I agree with you that correlations don't necessarily indicate a true relationship. When I took Histology in my undergrad years, the professor obtained his exam questions from histology and pathology medical board review books. His rational was that since we were all pre-med students, we should know ahead of time what to expect in medical schools and the exams we will eventually take in the future. They were difficult but I still scored above 95% on each of his exams consistantly. However, I don't have a great MCAT score. This tells me that I have the ability to do well on the boards in the future, and MCAT is an entirely different type of exam, eventhough they are both standardized. Also, English is my second language, which may have contributed a little on my MCAT score. But I still have three interview invitations, which leads me to believe that the admissions think I have good enough numbers.

I believe you should retake MCAT. Although, I have seen several people get into allopathic medical schools with MCAT less than 20. I know a student who scored 18, but still got accepted at a medical school in Texas. And, no, she did not get waitlisted either. I hope this would encourage you a bit. Good luck.
