How many D.O. schools should I apply to? Are there any rating out there on the web? Which are the best schools?

I have a 3.18 GPA undergrad in Biology, 3.67 GPA graduate school in Zoology with 9V 9P 11B S MCAT's (9V 11P 11B S in '93).

There are only 19 Osteopathic Medical Schools in the United States. You can find information about all of them on this website, and you can do a side by side comparison of schools at www.usnews.com.

Apply to as many schools as financially possible.

You may also want to talk to the admissions committee from each school to get an idea of what you strong points are and if they think you are a strong applicant.

Good luck, and let us all know how it goes!

JPHazelton is correct. Apply to as many schools as possible.

The best school is the school that fits your needs and the one that lets you in.

This having been said, I would suggest you visit as many of the schools you apply to as possible. This does two things, it allows you to see the school and see if the students there are miserable 'gunners' and it allows you to talk to someone in the addmissions office so they can put a face with your name.

My 2 cents:
Ignore US News ranking. They rate on crap like research dollars. DO schools aren't primarily research schools (so you get more faculty attention and better education in my opinion) and so the rank doesn't give you anything to work with. Check each schools web pages and call them all to get literature sent! I would WATCH OUT for schools stating pseudo-requirements such as UNECOM. They mention looking for New England residents or people who desire to practice there. I agree with their practice by the way, they need good docs. The only schools I never got an interview from all mentioned a "preference" for locals, coincidence? Maybe. West Virginia and TCOM are TOTALLY a waste of money if you're not a resident as they almost never accept out of staters. Yes the almost never disclaimer because someone will read this and tell us about their friends, uncle's, grandpa who did do it. Feel free to email if I can help further.

I will not tell you any relative stories, but I disagree with the above post!!!
I can tell you in my class at WVSOM (West Virginia) I have a good number of out-of- state classmates! I can not find my directory, just counting in my head real quick, I have come up with 20%. For some reason, 30% sounds like the correct number, because I remember figuring it out our first year. To me that is a pretty good number!! I am MSIV, but I could not imagine things changing that much.

Oh, and though the US NEWS is not the only ranking of schools, I must say since we have been ranked for the last two years, it has made a differance. you know everything is politics in our world, so yes ranking does matter to some degree.

I will say WVSOM is $$$ for out-of-state students. . .sorry about that

The acceptance rate for West Virginia residents is 37.4% and 6.8% for non-residents according to US News. Not % of class numbers, just acceptance rates.

try Des Moines Univ. in Iowa. It is somewhat close to you and I am enjoying my time as a first year. 1st year really is not that bad except when 3 tests including anatomy practical and written + bio-chem + histo is packed into one week. If you want more info mail me [email protected].
