any recommendations on where to buy diagnostic sets for good price?

Asking the fourth years at your school if anyone wants to sell might get you the best price. Also try eBay.

so what's a reasonable price for a used set? 50% of original price, 75%, etc?

does your school have a deal set up through one of the companies? here at UArizona, we were required to buy a panoptic set (oto and optho) for somewhere around $400 while it retailed around $800. guess with 110 students buying these things welch allyn could afford to cut us a deal.

if that's not going to happen, try ebay or even allheart.com

Anything cheaper than you'll pay for at your bookstore or online is a good price... Check eBay to get a sense of what a basic set goes for these days.

I bought a pan-optic scope set (Li handle) from Ebay a few weeks ago for 495. Then, Welch Allyn came to our school about a week later and sold them for 595. My roomie bought a NiCad handle one for 550 on Ebay and then they turned out being around 500 from Welch Allyn. So, my advice is just to wait for them to come to your school. I was impressed with their prices. You could get one cheaper potentially, but the school's prices weren't bad.

Gosh....can't believe I am saying 500 dollars isn't a bad price...haha.

get one used from a 4th year. you'll probably end up selling yours in a few years anyway.

Check out steeles.com and call them to see if there are even more cheaper prices and deals from your schools. I am at UM and saved a lot of money by buying from them.
