I'm a transfer student, heading to UCI during Fall quarter (have 2 years left before my bachelors). I have been interning at an Ophthalmology office. My plans are to pick up some research studies, and volunteer in areas that could benefit me. And take the MCATs next spring.

I want to know if anyone could give me some more suggestions on what else I should do to help my application, when I do apply to med school. Just help point me in the right direction. Thanks!!

Clinical Volunteering at a hospital or ER. (the longer you do it the better)
Shadow a few doctors (different fields will help)
Do some community volunteering like soup kitchen, homeless shelter, reading programs for kids, etc..
Join organization at UCI (possible becoming an officer later on)
Research
Intramural sports if you like that stuff
Pick up a few cool hobbies to write about

Do all of that and you will fill up your Extracurricular part of your AMCAS!!

good luck

Hey there fellow Anteater to be, Zot! One of the BEST resources at UCI is the bio research program, Bio 199 - I HIGHLY suggest you try to get involved and find a research lab as soon as possible, especially since many of them want a 1-2 year commitment. Go to the Bio Sci website, and they've got a list of all the faculty, and what type of research they do, with a little blerb about their work and what kind of student researchers they're looking for.

I loved my research experience at UCI, and I actually published a paper out of it as the primary author!

Good luck, and whatever you do, do NOT take Professor Cumsky for anything, haha - trust me.
