Like many I'm in the middle of the application process right now but before I send my AMCAS in I'd like to know the opinions of other SDNers as to where I should go MD/PhD and where I should apply just MD? I want to open this thread for anyone else who might be wondering this for themselves.

My stats: 3.99 overall GPA, 4.00 science GPA. 34S (VR: 9, PS: 13, BS: 12). 2-3 Summers volunteer work, 1.5 Years in research lab, Howard Hughes Medical Intern for summer 07. Full tuition scholarship to SUNY Stony Brook.

Schools I'm interested in: Anything in metro NY area.

reach schools: Columbia, Cornell-Weill
I should get in (at least to MD): NYU, Albert Einstein, New York Med
Safety: SUNY Downstate, SUNY Stony Brook

of these schools, I'm thinking of applying MD/PhD at my two safeties but I don't know. Any input? I'm also thinking of applying to schools in Boston and Philly so any suggestions with that would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

First I want to say that this thread probably belongs on the MD/PhD board, but since I am a fellow MD/PhD-hopeful I will take a shot. GPA is excellent, MCAT is good but the VR could be troublesome at top schools. I would definately apply to more schools and turn in that AMCAS ASAP!

In regards to MD/PhD - Don't apply if you are on the fence. This is not a decision to be made litely and you really need to be committed to MD/PhD when applying. This is one of the major selection factors for admission, so you have to be able to sell the ADCOMS on your desire to do MD/PhD! Your research experiance is a little on the light side for some programs, I believe I have seen a 2 year minimum at some schools.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Decide if you want MD/PhD or not, not maybe. 2. Research schools and see which places have strict research experiance guidelines so you don't apply to places where you don't meet the requirements. 3. Submit that AMCAS!

The schools you should apply to in Boston/Philly really depend on which program you choose. Your stats make you competitive most places, though, as I said, the VR 9 could give you troubles at Harvard/UPenn.

I was unaware that there was such a forum, thanks for pointing it out. If a mod could move this thread it'd be appreciated.

I haven't submitted my AMCAS yet because of this insecurity over what schools to persue MD and what schools to try for MD/PhD.

I am sure I want to do MD/PhD if I get into the program, but I'll be just as happy if I don't do it.
