Hello all!

I have been an SDN reader for some time, but this is my first posting.

I have taken all my prereqs with the exception of one semester of Organic Chem and the 2 semesters of physics. I would really like the structure, community, and the option for extra science classes (including a review of the organic chem I took last year) of a post-bacc program, but it seems that many programs say I exceed the number of completed core classes to order to be accepted.

Any advice for me?

Additionally, I would like to be in or close to a big city because I enjoy volunteer work in urban communities.

I don't necessarily need a committee recommendation because I believe that Middlebury (my undergrad school) will still recommend me.

Does anyone have some recommendations with programs that they could recommend to me based on this qualifications?

Thanks so much!

Uhh... where are you looking to be? East or west coast, midwest, south?

My friend had a similar situation and did a few classes at Harvard Extension and still had her undergrad do her letters. It worked out well for her and Boston has lots of opportunities. I have also heard good things about the Hunter College program in NYC for taking just a few things.

In the West I'd say you could check out SFSU if you wanted to be in San Francisco. It's cheap, people seem to do well coming out of the there, and since it's state school you could probably just do a few classes. You could also check out Mills College, which is a formal program and costs a lot. Not sure on its flexibility. It's in Oakland so plenty of opportunities for working with an urban population. CSU Hayward is also hearby and has a formal post-bac in which you could take a few classes. It is suburban but near SF, Oakland, Berkeley, etc. Don't know too much about SoCal but USC has a very urban location and a post-bac program you could check out.

Hope that helps.

how about people down in southern cali who's completed most/all of the prereqs? i graduated with bio, but a poor (2.7) gpa but would very much like to know of ways that i can bring myself back up again.

I'd look into the CSU campuses in your area and see if they offer a post-bac program. Up here CSU Hayward's program has a lot of UC students who were bio or other science majors and are taking classes to bring up the GPA.

Hi there,

At Loyola I'm enrolled in a formal post-bac program, but many working adults in my class aren't formally enrolled, nor do they need to be to take the classes.

Why don't you check around for formal post-bac programs in a city of your choice, call up the school and say you're interested in taking a few classes to complete your prerequisites. That way you'll have the benefit of being around formal post-bac people and you won't have to worry about having taken "too many courses."

I hope that helps.
