Alright, I'm from Michigan and I was accepted at University of Detroit Mercy and its an amazing school but they want me to retake my DAT because I got a 16 in one of the sections....so Im taking them this thursday, in the middle of all my finals and I havent studied that much. I was also accepted at USC and really like their program and would love to move out to cali and practice there. However, it is a bit expensive....I am so confused, if anyone has any advice please let me know. Thanks!

I underestand your delemma. i am in the same situation however between USC and ASDOH. I have decided to send the deposit for Arizona. USC has lots of advantages (good alumni, great connections and good faculties) but it way expensive. If you feel like you really want to stay in CA for the rest of your life and be in debt for about 330,000 maybe you can come to USC. But remember in CA there are lots of dentists already and I feel the competition is high so that is another thing to take into consideration. good luck with your decision

yup, california market is super saturated right now, and many dentists especially in southern cali have to work for corporations to get jobs. ie western dental = lame. just thought i'd put that out there.

i would go to detroit mercy because of the lower price tag, smaller class size, safer neighborhoods. usc is a nice campus, but in my opinion there are more pros than cons when it comes to detroit. 🙂

This would be an easy decision for me. I would go to a well known school, in a warm place, with a great program and a good name!!! Wouldn't you regret it if you didn't??? USC- all the way!!! 😎

If you're a good dentist you can make money where ever you practice.

Im still a little confused but thanks for all your input...I'm going to make a final decision by next week 😕

just imagine 80 degree days during Winter . . . 🙂 🙂

Even when Detroit had one of biggest events in the world, the superbowl a few months back, Detroit still looked trashy and it snowed the whole weekend. USC was an easy choice for me, pricey but a sweet place.

I'll admit that Detroit is kind of a dump, but it definitely didn't snow the whole weekend. We barely got a dusting. People were complaining because it was too warm and it ruined the whole "Winter Blast" festival downtown.

I'd go w/UDM. You can always practice in California after graduation.

According my dentist the clinical education of UDM is top notch. He said that some of the things he saw at UDM, he has never seen in his practice. I would like to go to UDM over Michigan if the cost of both schools is the same. Detroit may have some trashy places but it is still a good place to live when you have tight budget. Living in LA with $1800 a month, I can't imagine but in detroit suburbs I can get a lot for 1800 in a very very nice area. I am sure in LA you would get a BOX for 1800 in a nice area. I would go to UDM becasue it is a good school and I don't give a damn about the name of the school but I do care about the education I get from there.

I don't know why people think California winters are all sunshine and beaches. I live here and while its definitely not East Coast blizzards we get our fair share of rain and its certainly not 80 degrees. You should probably stay closer to home as expenses will be much cheaper for you

You'll become a great dentist at either school, and I don't think that going to USC will give you much of an "edge" to becoming a successful california dentist. And I wouldn't give much thought to the "weather" or "location" factor for your four years of dental school. As a dental student, I can tell you that you're gonna be incredibly busy and really won't have that much time to enjoy all that los angeles and SoCal has to offer. And when you do get that time off, you're gonna want to get as far away from your dental school as possible. As for the program at USC, I'm surprised you say it's great. I know a lot about problem-based learning, and although it definitely has its merits, those merits DO NOT apply to the field of dentistry. In my view, dentistry and PBL are like beer and vodka, they just don't mix.

But ultimately, you've made a great choice and you can't go wrong with either school. You're gonna be a dentist!! 🙂 :luck:
