Do most medical schools have ethic board? or something like it?
for example, i have a friend who is pretty much being taken advantage of and when he went in to talk to the administration, he was told that the admin doesn't interfere in personal matters...
is this the case on other campuses as well?

definitely NOT! We have a honor code committee, where you can report any problems you might have with another medstudent, entirely confidential. Usually students resolve conflicts by themselves with the help of other classmates. Then there is the Dean of Student Affairs for when things gets too big.

Q: Where to go with problems on with another med student...

A: A Dark Backalley...

If your friend is being taken advantage of, academically, it's definitely the administration's business. But a lot of schools, as well as honor committees, are reluctant to deal with non-academic disputes between students. And frankly, I think that's appropriate. The person who's taking advantage of your friend could very well have a better relationship with the dean (or whoever), and that person won't know whose story to believe. I do think the school has a role in any issues involving illegal acts or any kind of behavior that would jeopardize the student's future license to practice medicine, however, even if non-academic.

So if it doesn't fall into one of those categories, your friend should work it out privately with the other person.

thanks a lot for your replies..
i know that the dean said they wouldn't get involved... but when you are in a medical school it just seems like there should be some accountability and responsibility for your behaviour...
well, we'll see how this plays out.. all i can say right now...
trust no one - no matter how nice they are to you in the beginning.. that seems to be true in life and even more so in medical school.... that is sad 🙁

I faced the same problem before, there was this arse who thought i reported his misbehavior to admin, he apparently got drunk within university grounds, and he fails his exams so often..the admin and top management knew about it since he gave other students problems too..but at the end of the day, I didn't want to do much because these people are stupid, and stupid people's heads are ruled by their hearts and emotions, and since i'm still a student, I don't want to jeopardize anything..but if he touches one hair on my body..it's off to the police

My advice to your friend: Concentrate on your studies, and forget about these people..you might have to tolerate some rubbish from them here and there, but at the end of the day, you come out a winner 🙂

yeah i know... that's what i keep telling him - that we're in med school and he needs to focus on his studies.. but i also see his point when the admin says they don't interfere but you know that staff and faculty (some) are already involved - if not officially. Bugs me when people are not straight forward. But like you said, there are such people in this world. blah! Just need him to finish off the year!

If your friend has someone who is just cheating or taking advantage of his work - then I recomend a good straight: "hey dude, why are you ripping me off?" kind of conversation. You feel alot better when you actually can get it off your chest by confronting the other person, and in the end, if someone is so dope as to have to cheat off another person, well, what does that tell you about them? 🙄

There was a guy in my premed classes and he would try and cheat from me in our chemistry lab, until I told him forget it. I also mentioned it to the TA, to see what she felt (and to let her know what was going on). He got incredibly mad at me, but so what. He actually got into Stonybrook, and what do you bet, he's probably still trying to cheat from his fellow students, and what must his reputation be like?

We have a Student Advocacy committee (I think that's what it's called) for this kind of stuff. It was started mostly for harrassment based on gender/race, but now it's for just about anything. I haven't known anyone who's needed them though, so I can't say anything about efficacy.

Our school has counseling services and (if it is academic-related) a professional conduct committee, which is composed of students. The best thing, of course, is to try talking with the other person about it, assuming it is not threatening for either of you.

and always keep in mind this aspect about being a medical student and you're dealing with these 'thugs'..some of these moffos..they are 'connected'...so, sometimes admin might try to keep things low to save their parents' faces

I recommed the following methods:

1. The break dance show-down
2. Rap-off
3. Farkling (rock, paper, scissors, dynamite - yes dynamite.)

can we use real dynamites on people like them? 😎

Farkling? Use dynamite. They've probably never heard of it before. It beats everything. Even scissors? Yes.

Real life? Use dynomite. Nothing states your point more emphaticaly, or with more credibility than using Jimmy Walker-isms.

how do you form the dynamite?

DynAmite is done Fonzarelli style ofcourse.

DynOmite is formed by placing you mojo squarely over your funky-foot, then applying sufficient action on your traction to attain redockulousness.
