This question is better served in the osteopathic forum, specifically at the DMU class threads...in reference to your question about des moines, I had the impression that des moines was actually a family friendly city. Very safe, good public schools, very clean....etc. If you want to party every weekend then the eerily quite environment might not work. I think for med school that type of environment is perfect. But to each his own right...

I grew up 20 minutes north of Des Moines, and just graduated from DMU in May. It takes some time to adjust, but Des Moines is a very nice place to be. It has low crime and the people are pretty friendly. I lived in West Des Moines and really liked that area, which has expanded since I lived there two years ago. I know there are some pretty good day cares in the area. I'm not sure about specific child oriented activities since I don't have any children. I suggest looking up things that are going on during the week and on the weekends and getting out to see them. I know the farmer's market downtown on Saturdays is a nice way to get out on a Saturday morning. Ankeny is also a pretty nice area to check out, along with Sailorville Lake. Good luck if you have any other questions/concerns feel free to pm me.

thank you!

i went out to grays lake today and i like it. i've lived in nyc all my life and this is a big change for me. esp the city is very different. it is occupied only during the day and empty at night....but slowly i'll adjust. i just have to explore.
thnks all for ur help.

There's a guy who lives in a trailer in NYCOMs parking lot, you could try something like that.
