Ochem 19
gchem 18
PAT 18
RC 20
QR 14
I know my DAT isn't the best so Iam retaking it in June. Assuming I get some 20's and bring the AA=20 and TS=20-21 where would you apply? I have so much shadowing, volunteering and good LOR. Upper division Bio and will be graduating this summer. Tons of research and will be publishing in June....Give me your best advice. Thanks peeps

even with 20s on ur dat... ur gpa is significantly lower than the 'average' applicants. you could possibly try the newer schools? or even get a masters? i'll look on predents to get an average feel of what the school's average gpa is... gl

Good advice. You might need the masters as well, look into an SMP (Special Masters Program), and get 3.8-4.0. Bring the DAT up to 20+. Unless you get a ridiculous 23 DAT and get into UoP, you'll probably need both the Masters and the DAT retake.

If you must apply this cycle, apply to the schools with the lowest average GPA and the newer schools: Western, Midwestern, NYU, BU, Temple, Tufts, VCU, UoP, Tennessee, USC. Next cycle, the strength of your SMP GPA should get you some acceptances if you followed through with your improved DAT retake.

I had a similar GPA (SGPA 3.01) when I applied but a 22 AA, I applied to 23 schools (every in state school and every out of state school with over 40% out of state acceptance) - also, I applied in November. I ended up getting 4 interviews and 3 acceptances (just interviewed at Loma Linda last week), at what I'd consider high rate schools, so your GPA is isn't necessarily killing you. A lot of schools have cutoffs, so maybe think about retaking the DAT, because other than your QR you're awesome.

Congrats Viper! Your case isn't surprising though, since you have a very high DAT (top 5%, if not higher), reasonable GPA (3.35 vs 3.2), and are also URM, all of which are significant factors. If the OP got a 22+ DAT and/or is URM, their chances would be higher, especially if both of these were the case.

Well, it's really the Science GPA that matters, and I had just about the same as the OP. As far as the DAT scores, other than the QR I think the OP's scores are competitive, if you take the test again I'm sure you'll do well. I also think the URM didn't have much to do with it other than at Howard, but I'm not going to start that argument again. ;p

The main point of my answer to the OP's question is to do what I did and do blanket applications everywhere, all of your state schools, and every out of state with over 40% out of state acceptance. It's really costly, but it pays off in the end, and in the long run it's a drop in the bucket to the rest of the debt you'll be in from dental school.

Good luck, keep on keeping on, and just remember that if you try your hardest and do the best that you can, you'll be a dentist one day.
