Where are all the dang threads about applying to psychology graduate school, and the requirements, and the different schools, and the progress of people applying. Why is the Psychology category so dead? Every posts gets around 100views without any dang responses. Why does the cat have everybodys tongue?

You may want to check out some livejournal communities. "So you want to go to grad school" is one I checked in on while I was applying. Some great advice, some not so good advice, and a lot of "OMG I'm freaking out", so approach with caution.

I was wondering the same thing. I would have loved a supportive resource way back when I applied. For those of us that have 'been there, done that,' we may not have all the answers, but we can certainly speak from our experiences. But then a round of gre's were just completed and hopefully folks are refueling their resources before getting into the apps.

It is coming. These boards are cyclical and we will get there. Just look at previous years. Now, if anyone would like to talk about the schools I am applying to, I am open to it. Here is the list.

Florida State
West Virginia
North Dakota
Iowa
Colorado State
Colorado-Colorado Springs
Duke
Case Western
North Carolina
Catholic

Umm, here's my list:

Boston
U Georgia
Penn state
UConn
UFlorida
UArizona
Suffolk
SDSU/UCSD
Vriginia Tech
Temple
WAshington U, St. Louis
Drexel
Northwestern, Feinberg

anyone applying to any of these programs? Any advice or quirky application procedures I should be aware of? I'm filling out all the apps with the goal of having them all in the mail by Thanksgiving!!! YEahhhhhhh!!!!! Here's a fun game: can we guess what people are interested in by looking at their list of schools? (I have to get my life back).

Ooh! I know! Health psychology! Am I right? (I also need to get my life back)

When are you submitting your apps with Dec. 1 deadlines? It's looking like mine are going to go out right around Thanksgiving as well, which I hope will be enough time.

OK, I just discovered a "quirky application procedure" for Temple - it stills says on the website (in big bold letters) to have your official GRE scores sent to yourself so you can mail them with the rest of the application (which is impossible), but the FAQ says that this is an error and you should have ETS send them to the school.

I'm finding all the "quirky application procedures" to be by far one of the most irritating parts of this entire process!

My list is:

Georgia
South Carolina
Vanderbilt
Yale
Colorado
UCLA
Ohio State
Texas
Stony Brook

Yeah I noticed that about Temple too. They also want all the materials sent in one package. I was well on my way to following through with their instructions when one of my recommenders sent the letter directly to the school despite my instruction not to do so and the written instructions on the form itself!! At least he's agreed to redo Temples and others that require the one comprehensive packet (UConn, VTech, and Penn State).

I'm taking the week of thanksgiving off from work to get all my apps done (even the 12/15 ones, hurray!!). I said it before and I'll say it again, to all those who are applying while in your senoir year: my hat goes off to you. I can't imagine taking the GREs, gathering the materials (transcripts, letters, apps, CV), writing papers, studying, and taking exams all at the same time!! Good luck to you all.

Ditto.

I lucked out when I decided to go the grad school route. I was working full time (a ton of hours), and for quality of life issues and my sanity, I was going to resign and try and work part-time while applying. Literally the DAY I decided to hand in my resignation, I was called into a meeting and was offered a nice severance package bc the company was restructuring. Needless to say, I didn't resign.

OMG 15 schools??? That must be so much work (not to mention $$$) for you!! Wow, I am only applying to 10 and that was a stretch for me.

Just FYI: Someone told me that applying to 8-12 is the averge range and that it has been statistically shown that once you go over 12, your chances of being admitted do not increase, and may, infact decrease. Does anyone know if this is true???

😕 *Ella

I think that statistic has to be flawed. It simply makes sense that if you have more applications out, your chances of getting in somewhere have to incease. The only way I could see it being accurate is if people who apply to more than 12 are more likely to apply randomly instead of for match. However, if you have a good match at more than 12, I think it can't hurt. I only have 10 though.

The more I think about it, the best recommendation I have is don't apply to a school that you wouldn't want to go to. Think about it 🙂. I dropped a few schools just because I realized that for one reason or another I probably would rather re-apply than go there.

Actually, that's pretty close what has been published for the internship match. Unlike grad school applications, where you can presumably be admitted to more than one school, you can only match at one (or no) place for internship. APPIC data has suggested that, as the number of apps goes beyond 12 or so, your odds of matching start to decrease.

But that's not something you guys need to be worried about now... just later. 😛

I don't know how the odds of acceptance would diminish by submitting > 12 applications -- that doesn't make much sense. However, there is a law of diminishing returns. There is a practical limit.

Assume that a prospective student gets invited to interview at the bulk of schools he/she's applied to. Managing the logistics and finances of traveling to each site (telephone interviews are not casually offered) is prohibitive, especially given the limited time frame of the interview season and probable scheduling overlaps among the various schools.

The meaningful statistic that I recall reading from the Insiders Guide is that while your odds of getting accepted to any given small-sized cohort PhD program is small (~ 5% - 10%), your odds of getting accepted somewhere are actually pretty good, maybe as high as 50%. To that end, applying to 8-12 programs is the preferred strategy.

OK, so instead of just being a voyeur, I am going to participate! Here are my schools (in some kind of order):

EDIT: Looking at my list made me too nervous so I removed it.

To be fair three of those are developmental psych programs (back-ups... hopefully back-ups). But I don't think applying to more schools diminish your chances, just your wallet and sanity.

Amen to that!

Zbomb, did you do undergrad at UVM?

well, i'm crossing UCLA off my list because I just realized (yes, I know) that they require the psych gre. I recently got into a car accident, so i'm just scrambling to get caught up in school let alone retake the general gre or take the psych gre. argh, oh well, applications should get done this week for all schools:

SUNY Stony Brook (1/15)

focus: intervention research and cross-cultural influences/differences/etc

and 2 of the following: Rutgers, Colorado-Boulder, Fordham, URI
