BMW 325i without a question. German engineering!

Agreed. Yaris 2nd. I hate Hummers. 😀

I would choose choice D. A used Honda Accord and with the money I saved I would put towards a down payment on a practice or a cold start up.

Sorry to have to be the buzzkill here. 😉

Ahh, Accord is boring and used ones are expensive. I'd go for a late model American for half the price.

I wouldn't. The last time I did that, I spent thousands of dollars over the ownership of the car repairing a myriad of breakdowns and other design flaws.

I have two accords, both of which have over 200 000 miles on them and I have not put one cent into either one beyond routine maintainence and wear and tear. Used accords are expensive because they last forever. I haven't had a car payment in over 6 years. Aaaahhhhh it's nice to keep an extra $500 a month every month.

I will never buy another American car again. And I dont even feel bad about that because 90% of the Hondas are made in North America anyways and are assembled in Ohio. So Ford, GM, Chrysler.....FFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTTTTT. 👎

BMW 325i FTW!!!!! Have you looked at the BMW 135 yet? If you don't mind a smaller car I believe it may be in the same price range, and it's beautiful

BMW any day....

I would save up the cash for a few more years and buy the M5...

Thats my plan at least

I agree 100%, but that wasn't an option. As for me, I'll keep driving my 1994 Taurus with 193,000 miles. Runs like a dream. And like you, I haven't made a car payment in years.

BMW!!

But the Hummer comes in a close second.

I've got a 94 525i right now, it has 150,000 miles and it drives better than my sister's brand new Toyota. I like the 5 series the best (excluding the M series of course) but the 3 series is pretty awesome too... it's probably the most practical BMW out there; economically and quality wise.

True story. So are a lot of Toyotas. I drive a Cavalier (icon) and I think my husband's Tacoma has more American parts than my car does!

I think the difference is very minimal quality wise. Didn't Ford have higher quality ratings than Toyota last year? Hyundai Sonata might be a good deal also.

... Hyundai... quality?

There is no way a Ford, Toyota, or (ESPECIALLY) Hyundai can compare to a BMW. Those cars (excluding some Toyotas) will last you about 6-7 years max, for a Hyundai more like 4. Like I said I'm driving a 15 year old BMW right now with a hundred and fifty thousand miles on it and it still drives better than my sister's Toyota. The ride is much more enjoyable too, it's just a totally different feel. If you have the money, BMWs are the way to go.

Hyundai's are not anywhere near as bad as they used to be. No, you cannot compare them to BMW's, they aren't the same class. But they've gotten excellent quality and safety ratings the past few years. Check out Consumer Reports - Elantra was named one of the 10 best cars.

Out of that list... the BMW for sure.

Off of my list: Volvo C30 or the Lexus IS250. 🙂

BMWs and Mercedes have had pretty bad reliability the last couple of years. Far behind Hyundai and most of the domestic brands. I'm a GM and Mazda fan myself. BMWs are nice but too much of an ego brand for me.

Personally I'm not that big a fan of Mercedes... I like some of their older models; (the 80s SLs) but they can be pretty tempremental and many are not really in the same category as BMW. Saying a Hyundai is a better quality car than any BMW is insane. I cannot think of any Hyundai that has been on the road for more than 10 years... at least not one that hasn't surpassed its original value in repairs. They have improved, but they still can't compete with BMW. My rule of thumb with a few exceptions in descending order from best to worst:

Italian (the obvious: Ferrari, Lamborghini aka insane cars we all think are pretty but no one can ever afford),
German (Porsche, BMW, Volvo, select VWs),
English (Mercedes, a few Jaguars, Austin Martin),
Japanese (Honda, Toyota, Acura, Lexus-an exception I would put this above English, Suzuki-another exception, would go below American),
American (GM, Ford, ect),
Korean and others (Hyundai, Kia)

This is typically the way it goes... there are exceptions even to this though, for instance and Accord would be better than a VW Jetta, Passat or Bug and a Austin Martin would kick BMW butt.

Like I said, I'm still driving a 15 year old 525i, it was my mom before it was mine. It has been abused by me and my sister since I was a kid, and its not just a car to me anymore. I have so many memories of it, I always grew up a big BMW and Porsche girl under the heavy influence of my dad. That's what my BMW is to me, it sounds really cheesy, but it reminds me of my family; of growing up. In a weird way it IS family.

Anyways, find me any Korean car that can do that, and I have some ocean front property for you in Arizona.

I have heard that, but I still don't think I would ever want one... what report did you find that Elantra was top 10?

Like I said earlier, I'm on year 15 on my Taurus and it runs like a dream. I haven't put a dime in it for anything but gas and oil in 18 months. The last money I spent on it was two front tires and new tie rods.

I think so much of the life of a vehicle is in how you drive them. Beat the hell out of a car and it won't last long. Be nice to them and pretty much anything will last a long time.

I definately agree, how you treat a car has a lot to do with how long it lasts. I don't know too much about Taurus' but I have a few friends who have them and they do seem pretty reliable. On the other hand my friend Courtney's mom had one and it was terrible. She had to replace the
transmission multiple times, as well as some other more minor parts (due to acessory troubles). She bought it used though, which says something about it. I just think that BMWs are collectively more stable, reliable, and comfortable cars.

Oh, and by the way, I don't mean that if you buy a car it has to be a BMW or a Volvo to be a quality car. If you can't afford one or need to spend the money elsewhere then it's a much better idea to go with an Accord or a less expensive alternative. All I'm saying is if you have the money to buy a BMW it's most certainly worth it.

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/autos/0802/gallery.2008_cr_best_cars/index.html It's from earlier this year.

I didn't think I'd ever want one either, but my mom has an 08 Elantra and I actually like it a lot. You're right though, if I had the money I'd go for something else.

And I think the reason why you don't see any 10+ year old Hyundais is because back then there was still a quality issue. Wait another 10-15 years and you might start seeing more!

I have a Yaris HB. I love it!

I looked at the report, and if you scroll through they didn't put the Elantra, the Lexus LS460L, or the Accord in the same category... the Elantra wasn't considered a "Luxury Sedan". Maybe we will see more out on the road later, but as for now I'm sticking to my Beemers. 🙂

Gosh, I really hope you're driving your 15 yo car out of choice because I would hate to think that's the only car you can afford by being an optometrist. I mean no offense what-so-ever by my comment so don't take it personally.

A) I started a practice cold after graduation last year, so yes, I don't have the money for a new car

B) Cars are money pits and about the worst investment you can possibly make. Even if I had the money, I'd still drive it.

True. No better way to lose a few grand than to buy a brand new car and drive it off the lot.

If you live in the Northeast or Florida you'll probably want to get something cheap because odds are some idiot will ding it up or cut you off and you'll smash into them. I swear, ever since living in FL I've never had so many close calls. God I miss the South where people know red from green and please and thank you are normal vocabulary.

I used to live in Alexandria, Va, right near DC and the driving was a lot better than it is here (Alabama)... sure you had more crazy-taxi-esk drivers, but at least they had some idea of what they were doing... down here people are just really, really stupid sometimes. I do enjoy all the boys bending over backwards to hold doors open for me though. 😀

The H3 is a tank with horrible gas millage and only 4 cylinders...
4 cylinders!
The car is a phony SUV for a 30k millionaire...

UGH, I have family in Florida and it really is scary. It's 100000 times worse here in TN though, I don't know if it's a TN thing or a Memphis thing but the driving here is incredibly awful. People run red lights, they stop at red lights and then turn 5 seconds later when it's still red, they drive 100 miles an hour on the highway, I'm pretty sure nobody here has turn signals because I never see them being used.... anyway, this is a rant for a different thread. But yeah. Southern hospitality can't be beat! 😀
