I'm in the midst of the app season for this year, but since I haven't taken any science courses in about 9 years, I was wondering which courses would be stronger to an adcom.
Should I re-take the required classes (Chem, Bio, OChem, etc.) or take more advanced classes?

I got a 29 on my MCAT this April, and feel like I have a firm grasp on the basics, however, I got C's in some of my prereqs- would it be better to get that 'A' in OChem to replace the 'C', or should I prove that I can do the higher level Bio?

Any thoughts appreciated.

What was your GPA from college?> Why do you need to retake any classes if you have all you pre-reqs completed?

29 is a solid score. Even breakdown? What have you been doing since your left school?

I wouldnt worry about boosting your grades unless you are still in school for something.

Send along more info, in a PM if you wish, and I will offer a more individualized opinion.

Side note: you can never go wrong with an 'A' in Biochemistry.

Since your MCAT score is great, would you be safe to assume you know the information from the basic science courses even though you have some Cs? If you feel comfortable with what you know, I would reccomend taking some advanced courses.

You aren't really gaining anything re-taking them. I would only recommend re-takes for people who score low on the MCAT. Biochem is a great course, so is Physiology, genetics, micro, virology, etc.

The advanced classes would show that the C's you got in the lower classes aren't typical of the work you are capable of doing now.

So, you are applying now? Wouldn't it be too late to show the adcoms you can do better than C, or are you thinking if you don't get accepted this year, the classes will help for next year?

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I am applying for this year, and I want to take courses for two reasons- first, if I don't get in, then I want to boost my chances for next year, and second, I figure the more I learn now, the more I'll be prepared when I start.

My MCAT was evenly distributed- Bio 9 Verb 11 Phys 9- but I do fear that my low science gpa is holding me back. So- I'm going to sign up for Biochem and maybe Virology or Micro.

Good luck to you all in your interviews! I've got one coming up at LECOM in a few weeks. Wish me luck.

The beauty of Osteopathic Schools is just as they treat the whole patient, they look at the whole applicant. I think equally as important as grades is your life experiences. I am 31, have a family, have worked in a hospital setting for the past 6 years. I have had a chance to travel overseas, and experience life. I had an overall GPA of 3.68, however my MCAT was a dreaded 22R. On the bright side I am sitting on 2 acceptances. Don't sweat the small stuff, I am sure you'll do great
