I have shadowed/worked with DOs and MDs, both of which were competent and caring in their work. The one issue I have with DO schools is that many seem to discount the importance of research in medicine. Which schools are the most research centered? Also, which schools prefer a strong research background when reviewing applicants?

In no particular order,

OHUCOM
NYITCOM
KCUMB
PCOM
TCOM
Touro-CA

This is based upon the abstracts/proposals I've reviewed for AOA, and upon presentations at AOA Conventions.

It was quite awhile ago, but someone from OHUCOM got a cover article in Science!

MSUCOM, TCOM/UNTHSC, Nova, NYIT-COM, KCU, OSU, OHU, Touro-CA, Rowan.

The only time a preference for a strong research background would matter for a DO program would be if you were applying for their DO/PhD program. DO programs are not research intensive programs like UCSD or WUSTL SOM's.

Even so, there are limitations. Each of these DO programs may have some strong esearch areas where in other areas they may be non existent AKA investigators with no active funding left to continue their work.

Duke, Vandy, NW, HMS are all schools I can think of that accelerate or squeeze pre clinical time in an effort to allot research/scholarly time for the students. You're not going to find that sort of curriculum in DO programs.

The handful of university-affiliated DO schools will obviously have more research opportunities than the others. MSU, Rowan, TCOM, OSU, Ohio. If you end up at a school without much research going on, you can always go to a nearby institution to get involved (much easier in an urban area than, say, Kirksville).
