Which DO schools are within 30 mins of a decently sized city?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Burrell, if El Paso is over 500k...not sure

Touro ca is 45 min from sf...30 min from berkeley/oakland.

Which schools are within 30-40 mins by public transport of a city of over 500k population?

I think CCOM is just outside of Chicago, but most DO schools seem to be in suburbs of major US cities, there are a few located in actual cities.

AZCOM is 30 minutes outside of Phoenix, but you need a car if you attend AZCOM. You will need to own a car at AZCOM and many DO schools.

At virtually all of those schools with the exception of a few you will need an automobile to get to and from school.

OSU-COM is in Tulsa. It's decently sized. Has a little bit of everything.

Nice list, but CCOM is a little farther than 30 minutes outside of Chicago. I grew up in the area, and unless you're going 90 on an open highway it's at least 45 min by car (about the same by train).

LECOM-B is also about 30-45 minutes north of Sarasota (it's about halfway between Sarasota and Tampa). Sarasota's not a huge city, but it's got some amazing beaches.

So its not accessible by public transportation? The OP was inquiring about that. Some schools list transportation expenses in the COA, so you could probably get a decent used car for school.

You can get from Downers Grove (where CCOM is) to downtown Chicago in about 45 minutes by train. Idk if there's a bus that goes there, but it would certainly take more than 45 minutes. I guess you could take a taxi too, but that's at least $40 each way...

I think spending 90 minutes a day during medical school just getting to and from school can be a massive misuse of time. That is why at almost all the schools, a student needs their own automobile, just about everyone at my school drove during the first two years, and most students continue to drive during their clinical years.

AZCOM is definitely not a rural setting, but the public transportation in PHX is bad. You will need a car. Highways are easy to maneuver and there are a lot of housing options nearby so you may only need to drive to do errands, but not necessarily to get to schools. Lots of people bike or walk across 59th ave.

That is true but just about everyone at AZCOM owns a car. And yes housing is very close to campus. Some people I know who go to other schools live as far as 30 to 45 minutes from campus, which in my opinion takes away valuable time that you do not have as a student.

You should also keep in mind that some smaller cities have more vibrant cultures than large cities. I'd research each area carefully and see what suits you, as Tulsa is very different than Harlem.

Also, you will need a car to get to rotations at pretty much every DO school, maybe Touro Harlem is an exception but I'm not sure. It's nice to be in a location near a populated area and good public transport for recreation (when there's time), but for day to day life, pretty hard to get around in the burbs without wheels.

I can't imagine what you mean.

Well, if OP is, say, Asian, they might fare better in a place like Long Island or NYC than Tulsa, which is only 1.82% Asian. If OP is into art and beer, some smaller cities like Portland, ME, which has a vibrant art, brewing, and cultural scene might be more appealing than places like Tampa, which quite frankly sucks. But if OP likes to spend some time in warm ocean water and likes beach culture, maybe LECOM-B or NOVA would be a good fit. There's a lot of things that go into picking the "right" school. A city can have a whole lot of people, but not a lot of what you want from a city, so there's a lot to think about when picking where to go. There's a lot more to a city than just it's population- Austin is different than Des Moines which is different than New York City which is different than Miami.

As to smaller cities and culture- some smaller cities have excellent enclaves within them, good night life, and a lot to see. New Haven, for instance, has a ton of museums and great bars around, and you've got thousands upon thousands of students in the area due to all of the universities, plus a huge grad student culture. It's just an example that comes to mind because I know it, much like Portland. There's a lot of cities that are five times their size or more in the midwest that are ten times less interesting. Also, keep in mind that you'll be a medical student, so it's not like you'll be out and about all the time- you'll probably have a few favorite spots to hit when you're not hitting the books. So find the places with the sorts of spots you like if you want to enjoy your time in the hell that is medical school.
