If my app is verified as-is, I'll have a 3.0 sGPA and a 3.2 cGPA (significant upward trend), plus a 34Q MCAT. In my PS I discuss how I turned myself around in college and redoubled my academic efforts in hopes of pursuing medicine. I got my EMT license, started working in an ER, and have a 4.0 post-bacc so far (11 credits, 4 planned for the summer, probably continuing through fall/spring).

I know my GPA is not competitive. I think I still might have a shot, which is why I'm applying at all this year. I'm trying to come up with a school list and I know I need to find schools that will value my clinical experience and the transformation I've undergone. It's really hard to tell which schools these are from the DO handbook. Anyone have any suggestions?

So far my list is:

ATSU-KCOM
ATSU-SOMA
MU CCOM
DMU COM
LECOM (both campuses)
PNU COM
PCOM
RVU COM
UP-K COM

This is mostly based upon advice I've gotten from friends, and the fact that I'm from Chicago and would prefer to stay close. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

They allow grade replacement so Id say all of them. Also I think your MCAT will make up for your GPA, especially with an upward trend.

With your stats you can get into any school you want. Aim towards "mcat" schools lol NSU,AZCOM, etc.
But anyways, apply to any you want.

Honestly I think you're more than OK. Your GPA is not stellar however to me that MCAT score is. My GPA is slightly above yours, and I feel like if I can get anywhere around a 30 MCAT score I should be fine.

Thanks to all of you. I'm a little surprised by these responses, because when I posted a "what are my chances" thread before getting an A that replaced a D last semester, I had a 2.9 sGPA and was told my chances were very slim even at DO.

You probably didn't mention having a 95th percentile mcat score.

I'd assume they probably said that you'd be out of the running simply for not having >3.0. Your MCAT will prolly be in the 95% of those applying to DO schools.

Your stats are pretty similar to mine, except I have a 32 MCAT. Also a URM so I'll look to add schools that are URM friendly.

But yeah a 34 is pretty solid and should be able to make up for your GPA

The reason people told u slim with a 2.9 is because most schools do autoscanning at a 3.0 science and cumulative. Since u got it above a 3.0, all the schools will look at you (except for Ohio, they have a 3.25 requirement i think).

DO schools offer grade replacement so there is literally no reason for a DO applicant to need to be below 3.0. But I'm jealous of your mcat, you will likely be an oms1 in 2014

I especially recommend applying there for the same reasons the OP listed.

I had 3.0sgpa, 3.3cgpa, and 33mcat. Got interview/accepted to every DO school that I applied to..except PCOM. I was rejected there pre-interview. Also had a huge comeback story. Did same thing as you with some post-bac GPA repair and had 4.0. I foresee a good application cycle for you.

FINALLY someone with stats similar to mine! I've been creeping on SDN up and down for months now and you're the first I've heard of. Very good to know you had such a successful cycle. There is hope after all I guess 😀

Did you apply to MU-CCOM by any chance? I'm an IL resident and that's the one I'm really hoping for

Hey, OMS-2 here. When I applied I had 3.18sGPA and 3.44cGPA. MCAT was 27O. I applied to 14, got 7 interviews (turned one down, man did that feel good) and 4 acceptances. When you go DO as long as you hit min academic standards they know you can survive med school. What they want to know is if you will be a good doctor. Enter the personal statement.

Also, for the OP I would recommend looking into LMU-DCOM. I applied there as a backup and then chose it over some much more established schools. I love my school. Although, as long as it's accredited any school is good, IMO.

I did not apply to MU-com. I would be surprised though if you didn't get an interview.

I got accepted to CCOM with a AACOMAS 2.97 undergrad sGPA and a 3.06 cGPA with a 34O MCAT. I also had a science/researched based masters (3.98 GPA). I didn't submit till October but got an interview by the end of October and was accepted in November. I got interviews everywhere I submitted a secondary except PCOM. You certainly have a shot at CCOM but its always a crap shoot so apply early. As a fellow Illinois resident, I hope you get some love from CCOM. It's definitely nice not having to worry about moving!

What is the deal with Pcom? Is it just regional bias? I grew up outside of Philly so wouldn't mind attending Pcom but I'm floored at some these pre-interview rejects I see on the forum.

I don't know if I participated in that thread, but I would have commented that a 2.9 would screen you out of most programs; so there is some truth to your chances being significantly lower by having a 2.9.
