Why does anesthesia have the high substance abuse rate (other than access)? Other docs have access to meds and they are not necessarily more addicted.
Also, did I hear that anesthesia as the highest suicide rate? I was wondering more about the job itself, sometimes it is a hard job and you do the same damn thing ten times a day. Sometimes, you are treated like **** by OR staff and surgeons (Johan Kriek can chime in here if he likes). Or else you zone out while the surgeon does all the work. I have seen quite a few anesthesia folks actually sleeping during the case and the surgeon had to pretend to ask them a question to get them back on track and wake them up.
I am really interested in anesthesia but am also afraid I would miss doing clinical medicine and I would also be bored out of my mind - which might lead to depression.
