Which doctors are the happiest?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why does anesthesia have the high substance abuse rate (other than access)? Other docs have access to meds and they are not necessarily more addicted.

Also, did I hear that anesthesia as the highest suicide rate? I was wondering more about the job itself, sometimes it is a hard job and you do the same damn thing ten times a day. Sometimes, you are treated like **** by OR staff and surgeons (Johan Kriek can chime in here if he likes). Or else you zone out while the surgeon does all the work. I have seen quite a few anesthesia folks actually sleeping during the case and the surgeon had to pretend to ask them a question to get them back on track and wake them up.

I am really interested in anesthesia but am also afraid I would miss doing clinical medicine and I would also be bored out of my mind - which might lead to depression.

It is about access. It is just too easy to slip that vial of fentanyl into your pocket . . . Most other physicians don't ever touch the medications they prescribe.

Then why does anesthesia have an extraordinarily high substance abuse problem if they're so happy? It must be that they're so happy that so many of them are high on fentanyl?

sounds to me like you're putting the ROAD specialties on a pedestal.

They are good specialties to be in. There is a reason they are often brought up in discussions about lifestyle, salary and satisfaction.
