Well it's time for me to buy a new smart phone and get epocrates for rotations, but when I went on to their website, there were a bunch of choices and I don't know which one is really necessary. They run on different types of phones, so it also has a large impact on what phone I end up buying.

options:

Free Version (windows, blackberry, palm, and iphone)
Epocrates Pro (blackberry, windows, palm)
Epocrates Essential (palm, windows, iphone)
Epocrates Essential Deluxe (windows, palm)

So, which one do you guys use and what phone do you run it on?

The truth is, none of them are necessary or even all that helpful, IMO. I bought a smartphone and my school has a free subscription to epocrates that I used so I thought I was going to be a cool third year with my little phone. It's a piece of junk that no longer works correctly and I used epocrates about 5 times last year. I wish I had just kept my old phone and bought a book or two. Maybe that's just me being bitter about my crap phone (Samsung from Verizon) and lack of skills on epocrates though.

I had been using the Free Epocrates on my iTouch for the past few months. My school just set up a program that enables all of us students to get Epocrates Essentials for free as well. That was a few days ago, and I have not found essentials to be all that more helpful. I have not really had much time to experience the benefits of essentials, however.

Many people point out that you shouldnt be relying on your PDA/phone anyways and that you should be paying attention to you attending and residents rather than looking things up. I agree to some extent. I would never have bought essentials, because that extra cost was not worth it for me. Decide what is an appropriate cost to you.

Asking which epocrates is better is like asking which waterboarding style is better. To put it in a more intellectual way - they all suck.

It'll bog down your phone and isn't as useful as you'd think. You're better off looking stuff up on uptodate or get that to look up something quick on the go. The only real good use I've seen is the pill id which is only available for iphone.

Check out Lexi-complete a much better program than epocrates. I have it for my iPhone.

i have the free one and i never even use it. my smartphone is useless for internal medicine.

The free one seems to work out fine for now

So I'll agree that a smartphone isn't essential for third year and that you can definitely get by without one. That being said, I really love my iphone-- I've heard that epocrates on 3G was kind of slow but with the new upgrade, this hasn't been a problem for me; it loads almost instantaneously.

My school buys us epocrates essentials; I like it for when I'm blanking out on pharm and need to look something up; it's one less thing to carry around in my coat. Also, it has some common diseases in the database to give me a refresher on differentials and diagnoses when I'm blanking out.

I got the iphone because when I talked to blackberry users they all said they were okay with their purchase but didn't love it. I have never met an iphone owner who didn't love it.

The free epocrates is just a PDR the best things it has are Pill ID and interaction checker. I like Diagnosaurus which is nice reference for differentials for $0.99 I think. And a med calc can be handy sometimes.
