I understand that PharmD curriculums vary between schools and same with PhD, but given a "traditional" PharmD curriculum, what field in pharmacy (PhD level) would pair "best" if I go the route of dual degree? By "best," I mean the field in pharmacy that would have the most overlap with a traditional pharmD.

I'm guessing pharmaceutics and pharmacology/toxicology and probably not pairing very well is medicinal chemistry.

I'm not too sure there's much relevance to which setting I plan to utilize my education. I just want to know which field of pharmacy has the most overlap with a PharmD curriculum.

Industry or Teaching

I agree with industry and teaching. Maybe clinical research as well. Nothing else really uses EVERYTHING you learn and even those mentioned still only use a portion. It just depends on what part of the curriculum you like the most and then you plan a career around there.

All three of those areas are part of the PharmD program and apply to pharmacy. Med chem is probably a good area to go if you want to design drugs, but it definitely still applies to pharmacy.

A lot of a PhD program is learning to think and not just the material. You're much more focused in one area, unlike pharmacy school, and part of the grad program is practice getting to know one particular area in detail.

What area do you find most interesting? Why do you want a PhD?

I wouldnt try to chose a subject like med chem, toxicology, or pharmacokinetics right now. You'll do rounds of all the labs once you begin the graduate studies (after your P1), and then chose which labs' research you enjoyed the most.

The 'overlap' of fields you're looking for will vary by not only the pharmd curriculum but whatever areas of research a particular school predominately focuses. Research the publications made by a few of your top choice schools- Pubmed! and see what grabs you. It might be hard to find anything that will grab you too well tho since you dont have a foundational pharmacy education yet.
