How can you find out which hospitals have trauma centers?? For instance Columbia and University of Chicago don't have 1, but i expected they would--i guess based on their size/name??...Is this info located somewhere--or can you only find out when you go for the interview?? thanks.

This is fairly comprehensive, but many 'level II' and below centers are not listed. Whether or not they have an active trauma center at your residency program of choice, you will go somewhere that does for at least 2 months. Just like if you don't have a big peds dept, you'll go to a childrens hospital for a few months, OB is the same way as are hearts.

I have a question about that list. I've run across it before, and I noticed Harborview in Seattle is missing. It begs me to ask what else is missing.

Also, not all programs send residents to trauma centers. When I interviewed at Cleveland Clinic Foundation (the hospital does not handle trauma) I specifically asked about this. At that time they had no rotations set up at a Level 1 center. Due to increasing interest by the residents, they were adding electives at other programs in Cleveland, but still no requirement.

I have a lot of trouble believing there's only 1 level I trauma center in NY. Also all of PA is missing.

St. Vincent's Manhattan is also a trauma center in fact it was where they took most of the patients of the World Trade Center attacks

I beleive NYU is as well

Remember they have to want to be published to get on that list. Columbia however, I know for a fact is not a trauma center.

"This list includes trauma centers considered verified by the ACS Committee on Trauma as of May 19, 2004. The names on this list includes only those who wish to have the name of their trauma center published."

I know that Jackson Memorial has the Ryder Trauma Center which is a level 1 trauma center. They also have a trauma anesthesia fellowship.

I'm sorry but, in my opinion, you need to actually get trauma to be a level I trauma center. Forget the technical "designation". That is meaningless - and refers mainly to the facilities on-hand. Cornell does not get trauma. Period. There is very little trauma in Manhattan. NYU (Bellevue) probably gets the most, but compared to other places - there is very, very little. If you go to cornell expecting to see a lot of trauma...well, you won't see any.
