Hi guys,

I'm debating on some options for my gap year and what types of positions that I should try to get. I really want to be more on the unique side (even though I know that's hard because adcoms have pretty much seen everything). Should I pursue more of a clinical job in a hospital setting, or should I try applying for a position at a well-respected agency, like the CDC or NIH? Thanks for your feedback!

Depends on what you're lacking. If you have a lot of clinical experience in college, you might be better served doing research at the NIH or CDC. If you have solid research experience under your belt already, clinical work may help you more.

Generally speaking though, working for the NIH or CDC in a research capacity is a pretty strong resume building experience, probably more so than working clinically at a local hospital.

Anything works really, even if it's something non-medical. If it isn't medical, I would try and maintain some clinical volunteering.

People need to realize that it's not necessarily the activity itself but what YOU get out of it. Even the most "generic" activity can be the difference in your application cycle if is something that you are excited about and you can get that excitement across in your interviews and essays. Working a clinical job may seem like it's something everyone else is doing (and that may be the case). Still, your experiences and the lessons you learn are what matters.
