Which is more favorable - 3 A's & 1 B, or 4 A-

assume classes are evenly weighted

the 4 A's and a B would technically give you a higher GPA (3.75) but it seems like the all A-'s (a 3.7) are better grades

any opinions?

Yes yes, let the neuroticism flow through you.

Let it convince you that a 3.7 is better than a 3.75 because it looks nicer

Edit*
Really dude? When they look at your primary app they're gonna see one thing:
Your cumulative & science GPA numbers.

I think you'd want those numbers to be as high as possible....

I was under the impression that adcoms can see your entire transcript, but that in addition they can see your cumulative and scientific GPAs as well in a convenient chart.
@Goro @LizzyM @gyngyn Would it be possible to comment on this?

No Adcom member in the would will give a rat's ****ing ass. Seriously.

This is correct. The wise @gonnif showed an example the other day of what they look like for both AACOMAS and AMCAS apps.

We see all of the above.

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that the ADCOM wouldn't be able to see the whole transcript. Just their initial "hey what is this kid's GPA" look over will probably be just the cumulative number. Even still, I seriously doubt any ADCOM member would spend the time or effort to nitpick this one piece of info. As the all wise goro has said, they won't give a rats a**

Adcoms aren't going to look at the 30+ individual grades on your transcript. They'll look at the little chart that shows the overall and the breakdown by year.

And even if they did comb through your transcript... it's a B. Despite what it seems on SDN, people do get into med school with B's.

it only takes a few seconds to run one's finger down the row of grades looking for something like a C+ or less. Those are the real concerns.
You caught me with my C+ for basket weaving. How do you quantify those concerns if not by the year gpa break downs?

If a gpa is 3.8 or more, there is little point of looking at each grade. But if there is a poor year or a discrepancy between BCPM and AO (All other) then sometimes I'll be curious as to what was going on.

Let us assume the GPA calculations turned out to be the same. And now let us assume that the medical school committee is actually looking at the grades on your transcript. In such a scenario, I would think that 4 As and 1 B is a better look than all A-s. All A-s, in many classes, will put you below the top 15-20% scorers of your classes. It is more understandable to mess up on one class, than be a mediocre student who can't pull off a solid A.

how would you assess an idiot that ended up with 180+ credits for an undergrad degree?

Hmmm... seems like they liked going to school... or maybe changed majors... or what the heck is going on here... read the PS, read the letters, At that point it is less about grades than about motivation and maturity.
