I'm probably overreacting but I think I'll end with a B+ in chem I and chem II lab. I'm taking 21 credits (of just sciences which is by far the stupidest thing I could do). So does a W look worse than a B+/B? My gpa currently is a 3.89 (had a B in Eng II), and chem lecture is 4 credits so my gpa would take a hit. So my question is to the best state schools is that bad? I'm sure I'll get an A in chem II since the mistakes I'm making are simple errors and next semester my credit load will be down to 16, but what looks worse a B in a general class or a W, but when retaken an A?

And also when is a W a suitable substitute for a grade? (a C or failing?)

Take the B, personally would only drop C or below.

I'm going to add another little aside, as a current nontrad applicant who has taken more than one W as an undergrad...and someone who took multiple gap years paying off all of my undergrad loans...unless you are lucky enough to get a free ride, even the Ws cost something with no returns in terms of GPA. I had to pay back every penny. The less you have to pay, the better. A B+ is nothing. Yes, the + matters, believe it or not.

A W might look like you're doing GPA salvage.

And take two Xanax, please. Really.

Chances are good nobody's going to even notice a solitary B. Even if you get more of them, you'll likely be fine. Ws are for if you're going to fail and MAYBE for Cs, or at least to stop a pattern of Cs, but not for Bs.

Take fewer credits next semester. Give yourself time to get the 4.0 it it means that much to you and/or have a little bit of fun.

I hope you don't neglect you EC's at the expense of trying to get straight A's. I got into 5 schools and I had a GPA of 3.5, but I had stellar ECs. And I'm in the upper 1/4 of my current med school class. Perspective.
