Hey guys,

I have a quick question in regards to dropping and retaking classes. The english2 class that I am taking right now is taught by a really bad teacher. By that I mean that he doesn't really teach us anything, and the entire class is based on three persuasive essays. I think that will a "B" in that class, maybe an "A", and at worst a "C". The reason why I am considering dropping it is because I would like to take it next quarter will the teacher I previously had for english1 who is really nice and actually made us work. Its not really the grade that I am concerned with, I just don't want to waste time when I am not really learning anything. So, is it worse to get a bad grade and then retake a class or is it worse to drop and take a "W" and then retake it. If they are the same, I guess I will just continue with it and then retake, but does this mean that both grades will be calculated into my GPA? If I take the W and retake it, only the latter grade will be calulated right? Any advice will help, thanks for reading..

if you really dont want to be bothered with this class, i would take a W and then retake. If you do bad and then do a retake, both grades count towards your GPA. Do you have many W grades? I had one, and no one asked about it at my interviews, it was also in O-chem 2.

If you think you will get a B, then I wouldn't worry about it. Just finish the course. It's not worth it to retake.

Thanks for the quick replies,

No, I do not have any W's. I only reason why I would drop is because he is such a bad teacher. He doesn't teach anything, tells really bad jokes, and laughed at a few students the other day for failing his midterm. He is also a midget. Just saying, not that it matters.

well, i had talked to my counsler and he said that if you get a bad grade in a class, and you retake it, that they will see that and know that at least you put effort into it...

although i am unsure if he is right

^^^Lol.

i had this same question two years ago when i wanted to withdraw from Genetics. i was told by two different advisors that a W is better than a C. (also, since english is non science i wouldn't retake a C). if i was you i'd just keep going and get that low A or B. plus, if you have a good rapport with your previous teacher, would you maybe be able to have that teacher help you revise your drafts for the midget?

i did withdraw from genetics, and that came up in two of my interviews (casually; not a big deal), but since i was taking genetics last fall they shrugged it off. i ended up with a B, BTW. 3 acceptances so far. one W is no big deal.

good luck.
