Still trying to figure that out..

From my 3 week experience as an M1, almost all of them are the latter. The coolest kids I've met are the liberal arts majors. But then again, n=1, AND I'm a liberal arts major, so I might be a bit biased 😀

I haven't run across as many as I'd expected to. Even the ones that are like that are still good peeps. I've been pretty impressed by my classmates overall.

Definitely the gunners and I can't stand them. We all see how smart you are...now please shut up 🙂

absolute worst are the people who remediated and feel like they have to ask leading questions from the next day's lecture to make it seem like they've been reading ahead. seriously every class like 2 questions. This is the definition of "that guy" in med school.

Wait... people actually ask questions in medical school?

No one really asks any questions in our lectures; we're all equally clueless.😉

In all seriousness, our professors randomly call on us in lecture to answer questions, so it helps to already come to lecture prepared (lest they keep calling on you until you get a question right).

I've been pleasantly suprised that there isn't alot of question asking done in my classes (so far anyways:xf:),

There are about 5-10 people who are super excited to answer anytime a question is asked though.

It only infuriates me when they interrupt the lecturer and waste precious class time only to ask overly off topic/non pragmatic questions. Today one of the girls in class got all bent out of shape over home births and PKU testing. Mind you the discussion was about the catalytic role of ribozymes in RNA bond hydrolysis 🙄, maybe she simply likes to hear herself speak. I wonder what her undergraduate major was, I'll be sure to find out tomorrow!

Wow, just wow. Do professors actually cater to this or do they direct the tangent back on topic?

This professor catered to it. In fact, he spent a good two minutes appeasing her propagandist emotive brouhaha. The discussion would have went on if another brave classmate didn't interrupt the girl (as she was speaking) to ask a topic relevant question.

I'm going to go with people with something to prove. Aka "Let me tell you a story about how great I am...with this question."

Generally people don't ask questions in class if they are genuinely ignorant, their ego gets in the way. Or if they are genuinely just have a habit of tuning out, they've been mocked enough in undergrad that they wait until office hours to ask the insanely obvious questions.

The worst for me have been the RN's, EMTs etc....Here we are talking about cardiac physiology in 1st year & they go off on tangents talking about troponin & CK elevations & LDH flip !!!! 😡

questions should be banned from class. If a 5 second google search does not reveal the answer the student can take it up with the prof via email.

Easily the "Let-me-show-you-how-smart-i-am" kid. We have two kids in our class like this...and I swear to god they have probably asked or answered 90% of the questions in class.

Whats worse is they raise their hand like this

or like this

Which annoys the hell out of me...and then they talk with this horrible little whiny "meehhh well let me ask a question that shows I have read literally one sentence ahead of where you are lecturing so I can hear you say that I had a very insightful question meehhh"

We make fun of this kid behind his back. I think everybody hates him

We had a biochem grad student who would sit in front of me and ask the stupidest questions. I made fun of her relentlessly. The questions stopped.

When you get to MS3, you'll have to participate a lot and be pretty active in small groups and with your attending.

So sitting in the background during MS1 lectures and watching other people flummox when asking stupid question after stupid question is a good way to learn what NOT to do when the time comes for you to step up.

I don't know who's more annoying, but the chemical engineers and the bio engineers are definitely the cool crowd. Especially the ones from Berkeley or UW.

Speaking of annoying, when do people stop calling their peers "kids"?

Well, obviously there are good questions asked. But, there are the people who "always" ask questions that of "frequently" unnecessary. That's what irritates people. Other than that, the ability to get over your ego and ask questions is essential to success.

The OP is on the same level as those students. Grow up, kiddo.

Seriously??? I made a living off of chilling in the cut while my gunner classmates got pimped into submission on the wards because they wanted to so call "step up"

Watching other people ask stupid questions while you make fun of their noobness never goes out of style!

I'm one of those annoying kids that ask a lot of questions in class. Why you say? Well I already read the lecture stuff from the night before so what else is there to do in class but kill time and ask cool questions that aren't in the book?

..one of the greatest things about SDN is the ignore feature..

unfortunately you can't do this as easily in class, so the alternative is to just stop going.

Ha...we hardly ever ask questions. We're all lost after the fifth slide so we just give up and go home after and read through it ourselves. Occassionally someone will ask a question, but it's never a leading question or a "let me show you how smart I am question". It's an I was paying attention, but I'm still lost question...so you can't really get mad at them for paying enough attention to know that they don't understand.

Even glossing over the content the night before improves you in class lecture retention by many factors. Remember that.

Listening to recorded lectures at 2x reduces wasted time by by (1/2)x + y, where x= length of lecture in minutes, and y = the time spent getting to and from class in minutes.

Remember that, too.

You are detracting from your fellow classmates education by asking your "cool" questions. Save that for office hours.

I am one of those kids who asks questions, though not because I don't understand or because I want to stroke my ego. I ask questions to "gasp" clarify some point a professor made. I wonder how many other question askers fit into that catagory. I wonder how many of my classmates are on here talking about me?

The gunners are most annoying, especially the ones that have Epocrates on their iPhones and can type in a list of symptoms and pop out an answer.

From what I've found, the liberal arts majors just space out and doodle on their tablet notebooks (also a cool piece of technology I don't have).

In my class, most question askers are that type. They just don't ask most of the questions 😛

The kids that don't understand that all they need to know is in the syllabus... and that there is plenty in there to learn without spouting into long, philosophical tangents.

By the way... more than the chronic questioners, I HATE the kids that raise their hand to tell stories in class. Not like tell a story... ask a question... just tell a story. With a "have you ever heard of that?" on the end of it... ughhhh

You try WAY too hard, in so many ways, on this site.

not long before the ban comes for you

Chill, this is a thread is about complaining about other students. It's not like its a serious discussion nor would it have a conclusive ending or have any educational impact. Its all fun and discussion. If you have a serious question that cant be found on Google or Wikipedia, I'll gladly answer it.

I have a few principles for deciding when to raise my hand during lecture. If it's something that I just don't "get", then I talk to the prof after class. Ditto if I have a question about something outside the scope of the lecture that's personally interesting to me. But if I want the professor to repeat some factoid that he just mumbled or clarify a germane point that he just glossed over (these two are probably the most likely of all things to be included on the exam), I'll raise my hand in a heartbeat. Basically, if a question adds value to the lecture for most of the class, then if should be asked. If not--keep it in your pants.

I wonder if there is any correlation between post count per day on SDN and likelihood of being the douche who raises his or her hand every 15 minutes in class.

In my year...the question askers were the people who had read the books so thoroughly that they amassed unnecessary little tidbits, but managed to completely miss the big picture.

I have no idea what their undergrad majors were...but they were definitely trying too hard and missing the boat because if it.

Hmm... I wonder if I can get a summer research grant studying the connection between post counts and declining GPAs/class scores?

Yah, I'm a lib arts major, and I've definitely been the one explaining concepts to the science kids.

I will ask questions whenever I damn well please. And frankly, the thought that there might be some of you people burning up inside when i'm asking them makes it that much sweeter.
