Hi all,

I have two community service opportunites that I like equally, and I can't choose between them.

So which will look better for adcoms?

1. volunteering at a runaway hotline for emotionally disturbed youth, where I'd need to get 30 hours of training from the org. and counsel youth on the phone

2. Tutoring adults and teens for their GED

Any advice in making the selestion would be great!

Thanks,

Tofurkey

Personally...

I'd say having a soul looks better.

Good luck!

Both should be fine, but I personally would go for the counseling one. The experinece may help you during your clinical years by teaching you how to speak with patients. A lot of medicine is conducted over the telephone, so don't be discouraged just because your patient isn't right in front of you.

both sound good and very helpful.

im a tutor so i would prolly lean towards helping people with their educational goals since im confident in that dept.

however the other opportunity can be rewarding as well.

in the end i dont think you can go wrong. but maybe the couseling one may be more helpful for both you and the people who call.

how about doing something you'll enjoy and that you truly feel strongly about rather than trying to figure out what'll look better to an adcomm. Then you might be able to talk passionately and truthfully about it during an interview.

Hi,

Well, the reason I posted this is because I think both would be equally good and I can't decide, so I'd like to go with the one that will look better.

Trust me, I need all the help I can get.

OP - you had to expect to get kind of blasted on this one, didn't you? people on these boards hate it when you pick your ec's based on what looks better. but don't worry, i'm not like that, i feel your pain. personally, i think the counseling will look better because it involves communicating with people on a personal level about things that are troubling them, and that's really what medicine is all about. that said, they would both be fine ec's. like someone above said, just make sure you're doing something you really want to be doing and are enthusiastic about, and that will come through to the adcoms.

Either of these would look very good.

The adcoms want you to be balanced, with a variety of experiences, but strong academically. So... if you already have a strong record on academics, then go for the runaway hotline. If you have a weak academic record, then do the GED teaching.
