Hi everyone! I'm an undergrad and currently my major is sport and exercise science. When all is said and done I want to be a DPT working in a children's hospital. I would like to specialize in special needs and/or traumatic brain injuries. I have also considered minoring in speech and communication disorders. I have taken 2 semesters of ASL and fell in love with that so it would be a bonus to be able to use it one day.

My question is, is a bachelors in sport and excercise science an appropriate degree to get into grad school or to able to utilize once I graduate in a children's hospital or should I change it to health sciences?

Also, should I minor in speech and communication disorders? I wanted to minor in nutrition but they don't offer it at my university.

So someone can correct me if I'm mistaken. But DPT programs graduate everyone as a general PT. Specializing would require you to apply to a residency program that would start after your DPT program. If you want to minor or major in something to learn more about it beforehand go for it, but I don't think it would matter to a residency program what you did in undergrad.
if you wanted to look up residency programs the link is here.

That's a common major along with Kinesiology, for pre-PT students. If you are also interested in nutrition, do take some classes in it without committing yourself to a minor.
Another thing you might want to do, maybe this summer when you have time, is go to the websites of the PT programs you are interested in and make yourself a list of their pre- requisite classes. The list of pre- reqs is not long, but you want to be sure you get them in your registration plan. I like that you are planning ahead!

Sport and exercise science is a common major as well for Pre-PT. As for your minor, I would just make sure that you get your prereqs done and as long as your minor choice doesnt interfere with that, you can do pretty much whatever! I minored in Music and I was able to get my all my prereqs done, so do whatever you are interested in!

Thank you! I only have the choice of one school really because I have3 kids and can't move their schools again. So I'm trying to do everything I can to stand out at mine. We don't have a kinesiology major so I will probably sick with support and exercise science.

That's a common Pre-PT major so it's fine, just make sure you complete all your pre-reqs. your minor sounds really interesting and is different, Iwould say go for it, it looks like it would compliment well what you want to do in the long run and would look nice and different on your application.

You can major in whatever you want as long as you can score a high GPA and complete your pre reqs. When it becomes time to apply to a children's hospital, they are going to care much more about your license and clinical affiliations than anything you did in undergrad.

So do well, and talk to the PT schools you're interested in about how they do clinical to ensure you can do a pediatric affil
