I vote Temple. I was shocked by the neighborhood when I went to interview there. Are there any other med schools located in equally ghetto areas?

My vote is for SLU. When I interviewed there students even warned me that no one lives by the school because it is dangerous. Rumor is that if you get even a couple of blocks away from the university you are in some pretty bad neighborhoods.

Iran University of Medical Sciences

Especially if you are an infidel like me

I didn't really like SLU's location, but it wasn't nearly as bad as this. Sure a there are some locations to avoid and to not park your car, but thats common at a lot of urban medical schools.

If we are counting in the US only, Id have to vote for UCincinnati, I felt sooo much safer at my undergrad school- in Detroit.

My vote would be Rosalind Franklin, having stuided there before. It's 45 minutes away from both Milauwakee and Chicago, and has no major hospital affiliation.

It's in the middle of nowhere and is very depressing.

i personally think UAB is in a "bad" location; to me it looked like it was in the ghetto, and when i went to the food fair grocery store at night and saw that police officers work in the grocery store bagging groceries cuz it's so dangerous, i knew that the school was really in the ghetto...holla!

Are you kidding? 😛 Have you been apartment hunting yet? I would hate to walk to class by myself from some of the apartment buildings.

The University of Nevada. Reno is the nastiest little excuse for a city in the world.

I agree. Baltimore isn't that bad compared to N. Philly. I liked the immediate area of UMD and I know a few students who lived on campus.

Whats up with this huge fear of the ghetto? Ridiculous. It just goes to show you how affluent and sheltered medical students and premeds in general are. I go to school in a fairly bad area, and i've spent time in really bad areas, i've never been afraid for my life or my wallet, and i take long walks at 2am, alone. But maybe that's because i know how to fight, and i'm 6'5" and imposing looking 😛 .. Toughen up a little bit.. seriously! I cant understand why girls especially will refuse to go out alone at night around here. Just freaking learn how to defend yourself, or buy a weapon!

Are you serious? It's fine that you want to go walking around alone at night, but you really shouldn't judge other people for not doing so. Women are very vulnerable when walking around alone, and that's just the truth. Even running alone is dangerous, or living alone in an apartment. I know one woman who was attacked while running (and I've heard of plenty others), and another woman who was attacked because the person had noticed that she lived alone.

Women are, on average, not as strong as men. Some crazy people out there like to attack other people. Women have to worry about their wallets, yes, and also the fear of being raped and/or killed.

That said, I agree that a "ghetto" location isn't necessarily a bad thing. As long as you take precautions to protect yourself, it could be a good learning environment. Particularly if the school's hospitals are in similar locations, as you will get to see a lot of things you might not see in "better" locations (as to why that is true, that's another topic altogether). And I agree that it probably stems from a somewhat elitist and spoiled attitude that pre-meds have (I have it too).

Of course I probably won't practice what I preach. It is nice to have nice-looking surroundings and to feel safe. Also many schools in nice locations have affiliated hospitals in poorer or rougher neighborhoods.

Speaking as someone who has been held up, 6'5" is useless when you are staring down the barrel of a gun. Just more to get shot at. Not sure what bad area you go to school at but there are certainly neighborhoods on the east coast where it would be foolish to walk alone at night, and most states don't legally permit the carrying of weapons.

I went to the temple area in philly.... and I didn't think there was places like that in the United states. There isn't anything that resembles anything like that in Boston. But then again... I haven't really been to many other cities.

I agree, Temple is in a bad area. I haven't been to too many schools so I really comment on the worst. Within Philadelphia, Temple wins hands down.

is this fairly bad area in Madison?

For the other posters, the area around SLU is pretty bad, but in my opinion nowhere near as bad as Wayne State or Hopkins.

Or maybe you just don't go to those areas, because Mattapan is just as bad (if not worse) as the area around Temple.

I'm with Tink on this one. My husband has been working on Fayette St (about 3 blocks form UMd) for several years and oh boy, are there stories to tell. The vet getting shot in front of the VA two weeks ago is actually one of the milder ones. As a JHMI alum, I think UMd's campus is much sketchier than Hopkins.

omg, tell me about it
my roommate actually saw someone getting mugged while being stationed around there (she's an emt)
and dorchester..... i mean, some parts may be ok, but omg, other parts cant get ghettoer

And if you are getting into your car, and I quickly step over and stick a gun in your face while your hands are full of seatbelt, what exactly will prevent that?

Even a 12-year old could take down a 6'5" dude with a gun. This is relavent because, I have friends in teach for america, which have had 12-year old students arrested for being invovled in drive-by shootings. Where is this fairly bad area you go to school in?

My vote is Temple and schools in New Orleans cause that area is thug

Well I'm doing it. The UMD campus area doesn't bother me too much, and they are trying to build/clean it up. Of course that doesn't mean I'll be wandering around by myself at 3am.

Yeah, Tulane is two blocks away from the projects.

But on the other hand, I guess if you want to be next to some great hospitals that you get some great clinical time in, you have to be in rough areas.

This is true. KU Med is in a rough area. Even the tour guides, whose jobs presumably are to sell the school, were saying not to go out alone at night. OTOH it makes for some interesting work at the ER there and at partner hospitals 😉

If I had to vote for the med school in the NICEST area, I'd have to go with WashU.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS! YES, IT IS NECESSARY TO BE SAFE! BUT DONT BE OVERLY DRAMATIC ABOUT IT! IT IS OBVIOUS THAT MANY OF THESE KIDS THAT SAY THIS HAVE BEEN SHELTERED THEIR ENTIRE LIFE!

I have been a lakers fan all my life! But I am hoping that they continue to lose so Jerry Buss will wake up, and not give Dumb ass Byrant so much control, especially since he is nothing more than an employee!

It sucks, but it is business! I think they will have a losing season until they can get from under the salary cap. Then they will go out and get a big man and a couple of good power and small forwards that take up some room down low and have great fundamentals.

I'd say UMich.

A tornado came through town last year and did $10 Million worth of improvements.

My vote goes to Temple, and Tulane is a close second.

Id have to say Drexel, its in the worst part of Philly. One guy that I interviewed with told me a story. He asked a guy for directions and the guy said sure take the train but dont go into this station because more people go in than come out.

bullsh**t
drexel is in east-falls....a really nice SUBURB of philly.
the hospital is in philly but near city hall...a really nice PART of philly.

temple isn't bad...trust this from a guy who has spent numerous YEARS in the area and not just visited.

nothing at all to worry about.

okay tough guy, you go on and walk all by yourself in the bronx or harlem at 2 am at night.

University of McGill Medical College in Montreal.

I wouldn't think twice about going there without a b.b. gun at least.

What?

Please explain because I don't understand why you think McGill is a dangerous place. It is practically located in Westmount, the most affluent part of Montreal. My sister who is 5' nothing and 100 lbs soaking wet goes to McGill and goes out at all times of the day/night without worries. Sure, Montreal now has a gang problem, but that's mostly in the east end of town, far away from McGill.

My vote goes for Einstein. It doesn't have the nicest surrounding area...

to take a different approach, I'd say Mayo is in one of the worst locations. Certainly it's safe, but there is absolutely nothing to do in Crotchester. Ick.

Of the places I've seen, I choose Hopkins. I don't think UMD is bad but Hopkins is shady.

But the funny thing for me is that I think Baltimore has some of the nicest and warmest people I've ever met. It's almost like a small town in some ways.

that says nothing about the location. and besides, "too sunny" and too hot are not ideal weather to everyone....

Wow, those of you who think Tulane is in one of the "worst" areas must not like to have fun! It's NEW ORLEANS for cripes sake, one of the most fun cities in the world! As long as you know which areas to avoid, you're fine. The area right around Tulane isn't bad, actually. It's true that the projects and the nicer areas of NOLA are sort of intermingled with each other, but that's just how New Orleans is. It doesn't mean that every area is horrible.

Never heard of it. Maybe you mean McGill University Faculty of Medicine which is down the block from the chicest street in Montreal?

Dartmouth. Give me the ghetto any day.

Do you mean Temple? Because Drexel is in the suburbs in a pretty nice area, and has a very pretty campus. Even Hahnemann hospital is in a good area of town (Center City).

True the area around Einstein isn't beautiful, but it's pretty safe and all around not bad. I did research there for a summer and didn't mind the location at all. For one thing it's a fairly short bus ride from Manhattan. Also, even walking to the supermarket I never felt like it was a "bad" area, and I never felt unsafe. There are a lot worse locations to go to school, IMO.
