I want to get a notebook before I start medical school next year. Does it matter at all whether I get a mac or a pc? I am thinking about a powerbook, but I'm wondering if it will be compatable with everything.

Ask the school what they prefer.

I would think PC since 95% of the world use them.

yea, you should ask the school. for example, osu's wireless hospital is only pc compatible...but on the subject of notebooks, i love macs. the g4 screens are so friggin clear...totally blows away pc's and regular monitors. if you're looking for a pc, if you have the extra cash, i'd get an ibm t41 or 40 or maybe an r series because they are super dependable. otherwise, a dell 300m is nice too.

If you got into Med School then consider yourself in the top percentage of applicants.

Why not use the computer utilized by the top 5% of computer users, MAC!

especially since only 5% of med schools are MAC compatible

I'm thinking of getting a notebook too before med school in August. I'm ready to convert to Mac religion. After years and years of PCs, I'm looking forward to getting one of those awesome Powerbooks. :horns:

My school is 100% PC. I wouldn't recommend getting a Mac for the simple reason that a ton of our stuff is done on computers, and it's real nice to be able to get an entire course on my computer and study from there. Besides, there is a reason mac's only have a 5% share (I thought it was 10. Maybe it went down)

I would probably get a MAC powerbook as long as there is no compatability issue with the med school that I would attend. My brother has a MAC powerbook and those things are sweet! It has less problems and much less virsues than a PC. I am tired of getting XP and Explorer errors.

i know more peeps with pc's, so it would be easier for me to get software. if there were no compatibility issues and i had easy free access to software, i'd switch over to a mac.

Macs are "nicer" (good battery life, better sleep modes, look generaly better), but are expensive and less compatible.

PCs are more "rough" (uglier, awkward sleep, etc), but are cheaper, faster, and more compatible.

Unless you have a compelling reason to use a Mac (i.e. you're a pure aesthetic or have some mac-only software) then a PC will save you a lot of money and give you less headaches.

Or, just wait until you're in school, then you get a discount anyway.

I've used a Mac all throughout undergrad and I have had very few issues with 'compatibility' or whatever that entails.

Wait, come to think of it now, my Powermac isn't compatible with the Sobig virus or the MyDoom worm. Damn, guess I should get a Dell.

hahaha, good one. i loooooove how macs look and i was actually thinking of switching but my roomie has issues with her iMac. Like sometimes, she would lose her internet connection for hours! at least in my hall, it never happened to us PC users. 😀

GET A MAC!!!! 😀

I have always had a PC, until mine was stolen last summer (with my personal statement on it that I had stupidly not backed up). Anyway, afterwards I got a 12 inch Powerbook and DAMN this thing is sweet! I can't believe I suffered through Windows for that long.

The new OS X Panther is awesome, you can get all your office programs on Mac, iTunes and all that stuff is hands down the best, Bluetooth is included (and I use it all the time now for things like sending files to friends or syncing up my address book with my phone), and everything works amazingly well together. Plus, my PB is so small and the battery lasts for so long that I take it everywhere and actually use it.

Mac: 😍

PC: +pissed+

amen, i'm getting a 12" powerbook this week. they are the ****.

there really isn't a compatibility issue anymore as far as i can tell from the computer experts i've talked to.

i too, have been an avid PC fan my entire life...
but starting next fall (crossing fingers because i'm still waiting🙂), i'm making the switch.

they're just plain faster, better looking, and better video stuff.
yes they're more expensive, but heck we're all going to be in debt for a long time anyways yes? 🙂

If you have the money and dont have much software to run, Macs are great. But if you dont have much dough and need something that will work EVERYWHERE with every sort of software you can imagine, PCs are the way to go.

If your only experience with OSes are pre-Win2K and WinXP, it might be worth a shot to try those, they are really stable and run all sorts of software.

I was going to get a Mac, but realized most of the software I used doesnt work on a Mac, and that I didnt have the dough. Their comps are sweet though.

I had a powerbook G4 for a year... but it was a real piece of crap... not enough games... can't run a crap load of programs available for pc's... so I sold that one and got an IBM thinkpad T40 last year... and I gotta say... PC's ROCK!

I was going to do the same thing, but I figured I'd be too busy in med school to waste time learning how to use the thing. I already know PCs so I'm sticking there...

...plus I don't want to have to pay a premium for a notebook that may not be as compatible with the school's systems.

really? i just got a t40 at work and can't really tell the diff. between it and the 5yr old NEC that it replaced. i usually bring in my PB from home.

Macs aren't susceptible to most of the computer viruses that circulate around the net. I've had a mac for 7 years and never had a virus. But then again, as many have already said, it might be best to wait until you get info on what the school uses.

DUDE, YOU'RE GETTING A DELL!

Seriously, get a PC. Yes, I agree, MACs are nice. They have kick a*s monitors, and they run, for the most part, pretty well. But with a PC, everything is SOO compatible and easy to use. I gotta scroll through a dozen menu bars in a MAC just to delete a file when all I gots to do with a PC is right click.

MACs, in their attempt to make things easy, complicate things tremendously.

GET A PC!!!!

Think Microsoft! So easy!

LOL. You can even program it to respond to voice commands.

Oh ya, gotta love those MAC voice commands:

ME: "Tell me a joke."

MAC (computer voice, a la "War Games," starring Matthew Broderick): "Knock Knock."

ME: "Who's there?"

(silence)

ME: "Who's there?!"

(silence)

ME: "Who's there!!?"

(slience)

ME: "WHOOOOO'SSSS.... THHHEEERRRRREEEE?"

(slience)

MAC: shut down

BAH

Okay...you win. The voice recognition feature is still a little primitive. My laptop cusses at random intervals but oh well. It's still entertaining.

Top 5% of computers users MAC!! HAHAHAHA!! ROTFLMAO

No the top 5% use Linux or a BSD, something where you can actually control and tweak every aspect of the OS, not like a mac where you basically have no choice and pay more.

Go with PC they will work at all of the schools, whereas a mac will not. Plus you can throw a linux or bsd distro on there if you are adventurous.

This is true. Linux is the way to go. Be hardcore. 🙂

(but for us novices out there, get a PC, and save yourself some unwanted headaches. 😉)

Isn't MacOS 10+ basically UNIX with "MacOS" as an optional GUI? I have a mac but I'm running Xwindows.
