Hi all! Sorry if this is long....but I really need help. I am torn between quite a few topics for my medical school essay. The one I want to write about is my dad's illness and subsequent disability. I feel like that is the biggest reason i want to be a doctor and its not just something that im trying to write....that experience is a huge part of who I am and its what intitially sparked my interest in the medical feild. My only concern with this is i've heard everyone writes about a sick family member and I don't want to sound cliche.

The other thing I could talk about is growing up poor. It ties into the 1st topic a little because when my dad became disabled, he had just completed medical school. Because he wasn't working, he only had disability to live on, and that wasn't enough to pay off his medical school loans and raise a family ..so going to school was tough and I personally had a lot to overcome because of that. In general it made me very resourceful and thats something that I think will really translate well to being a physician.

Overcoming a low freshman gpa is another one. I did really bad my fresh year because I thought I could work and support my family and get good grades at the same time but that didn't work out very well. I had to pick and choose: work or my dream on top of doing major damage control, but at the end of it I managed to raise my gpa to something decent by medical school standards. I feel like my freshman year is something I will have to address at some point so this might be where I have to talk about it.

The other thing I was thinking of talking about my community work/my ethnicity and how being a doctor will be a continuation of the work i've done in the past. Thats more of the result of my past experiences since a lot of them are related to them.

you should only talk about experiences that contribute to why you wanna be a doctor, regardless of how cliche the topic is. It's up to you to make it sound NOT cliche. there are only so many reasons people want to be doctors and adcoms has seen it all, so it doesn't matter what you feel is a cliche topic or not.

Don't make excuses or explain away your poor grades. You can do that in the disadvantaged section or secondaries

^Agree with the above. I would just add, if you write about your dad becoming disabled (which I think it's a fine topic), make sure the essay is focused on YOU and why it influenced you to become a doctor, not (just) a description of what happened. If that is what initially started your interest, also make sure to include how you developed that interest and why you are still interested.

I think you might be able to write about both of the first two topics in the same essay. Or if you wanted to separate it out, you could write about growing up poor for the "adversity" essays that so many schools have in their secondaries.

The PS should be "Who am I?" and "Why Medicine?"

I feel like highlighting some of your struggles could show perseverance.
