One research has to do with drinking a small regular amount.
The other has to do with the results of alcoholism. Alcoholics who drink wine don't usually go for a Château Margaux. I don't really know what the criteria in Germany are for controlling wines, but maybe cheaper ones use different chemicals to sanitise the must, end fermentation or clarify the solution. Another factor is that people who only drink one or two glasses of wine a day may have a better lifestyle and nutrition than beer drinkers. In addition, since wine usually contains more alcohol than beer, maybe alcoholics who drink wine drink the same amount of liquid as beer drinkers do before feeling full. Beer also contains more water, which may be a factor in reducing dehydration. Since may alcoholics pass out, the wine drinkers may have less water in their system to flush out the toxins, resulting in longer exposure before they regain consciousness and drink something.
I am sure there are more factors not accounted for.

If wine is good for you then port must be better. And whats even better is shots. Basically Id say you probably want to be taking a few shots of liquor before bed if you want to sleep better.

Both papers have flaws. One shows simply that alcohols have lower hippocampal areas than non-alcoholics (you could argue that this is just correlation vs causation). The other shows that in rats (and you can't always extrapolate from rodents to humans), high doses of alcohol have different effects than low doses of alcohol.

The medical consensus is that frequent low doses of alcohol are most harmful to your liver and best for your cardiovascular system, whereas less frequent high doses of alcohol are most harmful to your brain.
