We are using McMurray's Organic Chem book and it is a sad excuse for a textbook in my opinion. I have also been using Solomon's textbook but it is arranged in a very different order. Are there any good Organic textbooks out there ? Which ones are you using ? What do you think of it ?

We are using Bruice's Organic Chemistry 4th edition, its dense but I like all the examples and problems integrated into the reading, im just starting ochem so it should be a fun ride!

Just my opinion...McMurray totally sucks. 👎 😡

hehe im using a book that my teacher wrote, took her 2 or so years.

Organic Chemistry, 1st Edition, by Janice G. Smith

she's from the University of Hawaii, but she did her PhD and all that at Harvard. then she taught at Mt. Holyoke for a while, and now she's a visiting here at UH. but she's been here for a good number of years.

It's REALLY good. It's the kind of book that you can just read and not go to lecture, and still understand the material. i highly recommend it 🙂

A lot of people (myself included) love Warren's book, it's very user friendly AND informative (it's something like 1500 pages). A post-doc in my lab recommended it to me once and I really like it. Carey and Sundberg's books are good too, if you want an alternative.

i'm using mcmurray right now, no complaints, though i havent taken many looks at other texts. so what am i missing out on?

Vollhardt and Schore are excellent. I am brushing up right now on my organic, and it really focuses on the physical principles behind the chemistry, and the practice problems are great.

Wade 5th Edition - very good.

We are also using Organic Chemistry by Janice Smith here at UT-San Antonio. This textbook is very well written, uses language that is logical and easy to understand and contains many diagrams to demontrate movement of electrons etc. It is an awesome textbook! Much better than McMurray in my opinion.
