This is especially for emedpa...since you are practicing and also hire PA's, but anyone please chime in on this. I am looking into PA schools right, especially in Michigan, but am willing to branch out as necessary. Which schools consistently turn out the highest quality PA's after graduation in your opinion. Thanks for everyone's input

just a short list to start. certainly not all the top programs but those that jump 1st to mind:
medex/u.wa
rcc( ca)
sjvc (ca)
usc
duke
gw (dc)
emory (ga)
northeastern (ma)
stony brook (ny)
cornell (ny)(surgical emphasis)
u. nebraska
drexel/hahnemann
u.colorado (peds emphasis)

1. Duke - (First PA Program, Best PA Program)
2. University of Alabama - Birmingham PA Program (First Surgical PA program, now it's general practice with a surgical focus)
3. City College of New York - Harlem Hospital PA Program (Old program, Hard core Rotations)

BUT if it is important for you to close to home... do that...because in PA school what you put in, is what you get out of it. Just because you go to the best PA Program doesn't mean you'll get the best education. Just do your best at a program that has good rotations and where you earn your MS at graduation.

Again, it's just my opinion...

Generally speaking......Older schools are also better (Networking potential). Wichita State University is ok (Started in early 70's).

Hello EmedPA,

Have you heard of the MPA program at South University in Savannah, GA? Do you know if this is a quality program? I heard that it has a 98% pass rate, and tuition is actually the same as Emory (probably because it's in Savannah). Thanks!

Bumped into a few of their students doing clinicals. They seemed useful🙂

"Generally speaking......Older schools are also better"
agree- they have the kinks worked out, solid faculty for the most part and a good list of rotation sites.
don't know anything about the program at south u.

how are the programs in Michigan...Univ of Detroit Mercy, Wayne State, Central Michigan, Grand Valley State?

What about WMU????????

Don't even consider WMU. Grand Valley has a great program.

what about the three programs in the Chicagoland area? Midwestern, Rosalind Franklin or Malcolm X?

wow emedpa, I never would've thought that RCC and SJVC PA programs would've jumped to mind like that. Do you consistently see good grads coming out of those programs?

yup, programs such as u.wa/medex, stanford, rcc, sjvc, etc which focus on accepting students with lots of prior significant healthcare experience consistently produce better grads than programs that require minimal prior experience. I have precepted students from MANY programs at this point and can always tell the difference.

I have experience with a few of them. Two were personal and I have met or worked with students from others. In general, the quality is pretty good. Though, you can get diamonds and lumps of coal out of any of them.

What about PA programs in Ohio? I just recently decided to attend PA school and I don't know much about the reputations of the schools in Ohio and staying close to home is a priority to me. I am willing to venture as far as the bordering states (PA, MI, IN, etc). What would you suggest as far as the better PA programs around here?

On a similar note...

Does anyone know where I can find the listing of PA programs. Now I have been to the AAPA website, which eventually led me to PAEA. However, they want $35 for a some sort of online E-book with all the details.

I'm asking this question because ideally I am looking for a breakdown of the various programs. For example I am looking for the list of normal PA schools, schools with a combined BS/MS degrees (5 years) and so on.

Not updated since 2008 so there are a few programs missing. The ones with 5 in the notes are combined programs. If you are applying the online guide will have more information about specific contacts and specific requirements.

None are bad. MW and RF are way out in the 'burbs; MW is west and RF is north. Malcolm X is aligned with Stroger/ Cook County. Their PA students seemed pretty cool, but theirs is a pretty small program and I believe it's a certificate (which potentially might matter, for student loan reasons or if you just want a Masters).

MW students were cool, but I worked with more DO students than PAs. The ones I met seemed really young for some reason.

I went to RF. It is therefore natually the best program in the universe, as far as I am concerned. I was well-prepared for rotations and the PANCE. That's all I (or anyone) could ask for.

You guys realize you've responded to a four year old post right?
There's nothing wrong with a little thread necromancy now and then. 😀

MW is likely where I will be shooting for when that time comes. I'm more or less stuck where I am location-wise for the foreseeable future. RF is to far up north for the commute. As much as I'd love to cut my costs through MX, the trend is heading towards Master's.

Either way, I've barely started my journey. I've enrolled in National University of Health Sciences BS in Biomed Sci program. I know it's primarily chiro school, but it is accredited. And from talking with counselor's at MW, they said that's all that really matters to them.

The tuition reimbursement program from my company requires that I work at least a year after graduating. So, I have plenty of time to get my ducks in order.

Has anyone heard about the PA program at charles drew university in Los Angeles...

any advice? is it a good school?
