Ideally i like the idea of Neural Engineering but i am not sure if they are in demand.


Which PHDs are worth perusing to not end up with 10 years postdoc and jobless?

Neural engineering? 🙂 What, pray tell, is that? Neuroscience made to sound cooler? Trust me, meaningless buzzwords are always in demand. Add "synergistic" and "translational" to the front and you're golden. Sorry to tease.

In general, biomedical PhD's rise and fall in demand with NIH budgets, and thus are mostly out of your control. Take comfort that at the very least you'll be more appreciated than the anthropology PhDs. There might be a slight advantage to graduating with an engineering degree, as quantitative skills are always in demand in industry as well as academia and can be quite impressive to the layman (ie those outside of quantitative fields).
Of course, having an MD means always having job security, an often unappreciated aspect of the MD-PhD.

I'm guessing he means a biomedical engineering phd where you work in a neuroscience laboratory. Who knows.

Neural Engineering is combination of Biomedical Engineering/Programming/Neuroscience. Monkey moving its robotic arm with his brain = neural engineering. Bionic eye = neural engineering. A guy moving a mouse pointer with his brain = Neural Engineering. A chip that substitutes for damaged brain tissue = Neural Engineering.
