I understand anything about animals is fair game. But I was going through AP Cliffs and the phylums of Protists, Fungi, and Plants were a serious pain...I skipped them, do I need to know characteristics of each of them.
I wrote general things of the entire kingdom, like the scientific words for their parts and what not, but that is it.

Some help?

I think its stupid that a dentist has to know about all of these classes and phylum. I understand that we need to study bacteria and microbiology, but is it really necessary to understand how an annelid ****? fo reals...

yeah really!

On my test yesterday I was asked a question about deuterostomes, corrals and chordates... know your animal phyla primarily... on Plantae you need angio/gimnosperms and bryophites... + protista examples....

Yea,

I dread this section in Bio the most, but I gave in like a bi@tch and memorized all the phylums in Cliffs 😀.

good, u will see 1-2 questions on taxonomy...@least

Is cliifs good enough for this section? or do we have to use schuams??? please say clifs 😀

I think Cliffs is good enough. No way am I going to memorize Schaums. There are more high yield things to learn/memorized than phylums!

I think all of Cliffs plus whatever is in Destroyer is good enough.

People, Destroyer is VERY representative of how deep you should go in taxonomy... if u have it stick with its guidelines, if u don't have it... well, get it, this will turn out to be the best 150 dollars you spend in your life.

I just started reading cliffs. When you say "all of cliffs" do you even mean the Lab section?

Before you say " just cliffs"
Check the taxonomy in Cliffs, it is hell.
About 20-30 phylum in Protists, plants, and Fungi that I don't know.
That is a lot of work.

hehe... I know what you mean, but if you really put the effort into it, it really isnt that bad. Trust me, I felt the exact same way as you did. I finally just sat down read the damn thing. I might be better if you read like one or two phylums a day, and the next thing you know you would have finished it all.

Ya, not really up to it...I have never heard anyone say they got a non-animal phylum question.
I might do some of the plants though.

besides these phlyums---plants is what I'm trippin off the most. Photosyn, calvin cycle, hormones...IT'S SO MUCH FUN!!!

:uhno:

I didn't mind that part too much...the hormones I agree suck, I think a general idea of their hormones is plenty.
Like 2 sentences for each hormone.

Haha. Hey man... I feel you. Perhaps you've known the answer to this all along but are just letting out your frustrations. If you don't then think about this... it's just another way to weed out those who don't quite live up to the standards of dental school. If they made the test too easy or easier by cutting materials out, then more people will potentially score better and "qualify" to become a dental student which also means more competition for you. You can ask the same question with why QR? Well, it's another section that tests your test taking abilities, stamina, mental capacity, etc. Dental school is not gonna be easy. They wanna make sure they jab at pre-dental students in every way possible from every angle. If you do well on DATs, pat yourself on the back. You probably deserve a consideration at becoming a dentist. But also be relieved that for your sake and for society's sake that the DAT, among other things, can keep people out of dental school that have the potential to become subpar dentists. Now we wouldn't want those in the world, would we?

I think ADA can make the harder in other ways. Why not ask more applications on the systems? Or mainly the human body? I dont think his point was to make the test easier but to maybe to make it more realistic. Info on phylum has nothing to do with your ability to perform in dental school, and I think it makes the test easier. All you have to do is sit down and memorize a bunch of facts. By asking application type questions on the body, you not only test ones knowledge but also test their reasoning skills.

Never say that a section of a test or a topic "has nothing to do with your ability..." Sure it does... knowing the phylum/plants/etc. tests your ability to retain vast amount of information which is extremely important in dental school. I do see your point in that the DAT can be made to be more realistic to what students will learn in dental school (your example of systems and human body), but last time I checked, only 1/4 to 1/3 of my gen biology book was on those topics (which is too little information). SOOOO that would mean including content from upper level science courses on the DAT which equates to adding more science courses as pre-reqs excluding many nonscience majors from applying decreasing diversity among applicant pool. Last time I checked, the schools are big on diversifying their classes. You know what the MCAT does? instead of including plants/phylums/Ecology/etc. they include physics. Pick your poison.

Oh and with regards to your including "application" questions, I do agree. DAT should be more like the MCAT which is predominantly a reasoning test.
