Hi! I'm attending NYU this fall and majoring in Global Public Health on a pre-med track. Class registration is coming up soon and I'm having trouble deciding which pre-med courses to take my first year. I know for sure that I am taking Gen Chem I and II, but I can't decide if I should also take Bio I and II at the same time. I took AP Chem in high school so I have some background there, but I haven't taken Bio since 9th grade. I've also been out of school for a while (I graduated early in August), so I didn't want to start off too rough.

The main reason why I am thinking about taking Chem and Bio together is because I want to study abroad at NYU Argentina - which doesn't offer pre-med classes, so I would have to complete them first. I also heard Organic Chem is difficult/time-consuming and I figured if I knocked out Bio freshman year, I would have more time to dedicate to Organic sophomore year.

I saw an NYU pre-med advising presentation that recommended taking just Gen Chem and Calc freshman year, but I wanted to get additional opinions. I browsed a few SDN threads and saw many in favor of taking Chem and Bio at the same time, but I was wondering if anyone would be able to apply this situation specifically to NYU. Thanks 😀

Bio and Chem is fine, I wouldn't recommend throwing calc into that mix tho

Thanks for the input 🙂

If you can study a lot you can definitely handle the calc, chem and bio load. Make sure that the other class is fluff (it will probably be writing the essay or one of those bs humanities courses). Orgo with jones is no joke and I'd recommend taking that without bio in your 2nd year. Just make sure that you stay on top of things - you'll definitely have enough time but you're gonna sacrifice a bit by taking bio and gen chem in your 1st year. If you think you might need some time to adjust to college life (which is understandable) take bio in your 2nd year. Best of luck

You could do the 100 level courses for any of the prerequisites for medical school, whether it be physics, chemistry, or biology. Keep in mind that most of these prereqs involve at least two classes and so you'll probably want to do them one after another so the material from the first is more fresh during the second. I took chem I, took two years for a mission trip, then took chem II upon returning.. not so nice.

I don't know what bigloley is smoking but WTE is by no means a fluff class, it is notoriously difficult just because it's one of the only required classes. Make sure you get a good professor for that class. I had great difficulty in it but it was a fun and enjoyable class if you put the effort in.
