Can anyone out there shed any light on residencies to apply to? I want a big city and I thought a university based program would be best to guarantee a high case load and plenty of broad experience, but now I'm not so sure. I want to operate a lot, but I fear a program that scuts frequently. Can anyone respond to this? 😱 Thanks for any advice you can give.

I am only an MS1 and have quite a ways to go before applying for residency, but even I can tell you that you need to provide some more information in order to get some help from the forum users here. i.e your Step 1 scores, research experience, specialty you want to apply to (ortho, GS, optho, uro, etc. etc.). You may also want to check out www.scutwork.com.

Best of luck.

This question is difficult for medical students to find the answer. The people who know often won't tell you. I know but my information is 5 years old. I did surgery but now am in a different surgical specialty.

University programs tend to be better for residents who want to do fellowships. University programs vary as far as amount of scut to do. University of Southern California is a fine program but LAC+USC Med Center makes you do a fair amount of scut.

Even if you want to be a general surgeon in private practice, some programs have better exposure to the different sub-specialties and the different areas of general surgery. For example, some programs don't do a lot of thyroid cases. These resident sometimes tend to shy away from those cases in practice or don't do them as eloquently.
