Hey all. I want to get some good points of view on dental schools "fun" that can be had. Which schools do cool things while there? School is like hell so I hear... but there are things certain schools do to make it more fun. So let's hear it from some students that know what it's like...

WHAT'S FUN?
WHY?

No responses...meaning there is no fun in dental school. 🙁

I once heard about a guy in dental school who had a couple friends over one night to watch Lost. I don't remember where that was, though. It was probably a lie, anyways.

I agree in terms of thinking that the dental school has to try to make it fun for the students.
However, I hope you didn't mean that dental students don't have any fun throughout their 4 years during school.

I heard that UF dental students have a block of seats and sit together at the football games, and this is probably at several other schools, too. That sounds like a lot of fun to me. Fun can actually be had by people who have grown up, contrary to previous belief.

I think this is what gunner was referring to when he said that. So I would have to agree with him that professional school is not there to make life fun, but to train student to become competent doctors. This doesn't mean dental students don't/can't have fun.

...Odd.
I've been out with some NYUCD/Columbia kids in the city (bars, etc.). They seem to enjoy themselves.

Are you kidding?

the point is that its a stupid question. I am not stating that professional students do not have fun, anyone can have fun no matter where they are. I am merely addressing the issue of focusing on having fun rather than what the real purpose is

if the school is in a bigger city, or part of a big university (UF, OSU, UNC, etc) im sure you'll make time to have some fun.

it is what you make of it!

Chill out buddy. 😀

You can have fun in some places more than others.

I disagree, every school is fun

School itself is not fun..

The people you meet and the long lasting relationships you make is what makes it fun..

but each of us has our own opinion.

Some of you guys need to mellow out

no matter where you go your going to get the same degree. For me, if a school allows for more "fun" in any given way then thats a big benefit to the school and something worth looking into.

I for one know that If i do nothing but study I will burn out. "Fun" is needed so that you get refreshed and can preform your best.

Obviously, one cannot have fun and be an admitted, outright "Gunner"

The questions should be reworded to "which school is more bearable than others?

That would depend on the friendliness of the faculty and .camaraderie. of the student body. As a student your life revolves around school and if you are not happy where you spend majority of the time, you will not be happy outside of school.

- You guys are lameeeeeee.... How could you survive dental school if you don't let loose once in a while.

- My school has initiation of the first year students, bus trips to sporting events, pub crawls, token beer nights, teacher student hockey game, student curling game, bowling nights, a golf tournament, etc...

- Dental school is first and foremost about learning to become a good competent dentist, but we are also human beings and need to have fun! You spend 4 years with a small group of people so it is good to socialize and hang out with your classmates in a non-academic setting. Most likely some of your classmates will become your best friends.

👍
I agree completely... Great post.

Gunner87, pm me on December 1st so I can make sure I DONT go to the same school as you. Kthx.

School is all about perspective. Of course it will be extremely challenging and seemingly impossible at times, but I guarantee that we will build some of the best lifelong memories while in dental school.

That's awesome... what school is this?

At UoP they said the whole student body and faculty were going to Six Flags next weekend. Sounds fun to me.

This is a great thread. I second what someone else has said. Please let me know what school these "bad apples" are going to go to so I can stay away.

Six Flags!? What are we like? Four? And glued-seats during football games!?

Well, woop-dee-freakin-doo!

Haven't you guys & gals learned to have a good time by now, and not rely on dental school faculty to hold your hands while they riverdance with you for fun?

No one is denying the need to develop good social relations and to do whatever it is they do for R&R here. 🙂

Since we won't know the identities and personalities of our class makeup before it starts, does it really make sense to ask the question the OP is asking? Unless he one wanted a discussion of the various fun activities different schools provide for us, but that seems unlikely given the wording.

The point is, fun is what you make of it. There is no singular category of fun. Some people like to have fun going to sporting events and such, some might enjoy reading, some may think fun is spending time with their family or spouse, and a few may derive more fun out of pursuing their studies for an extra while.

wow, didn't realize people were so opposed to having fun 🙂
i am a total people person. and would like to continue that, thank you very much 😀

so go you OP for having the guts to bring up this thread. because if not for you, i would have 😀

The people who find it impossible to have fun learning to do something they love, or can't find a minute of each day to put down their book and enjoy some personal interaction are probably the ones that have great stats but bomb the interview

wow, didn't realize people were so opposed to having fun

I think some people are opposed to the idea that the dental schools have to make it fun for the students not to the idea of having fun itself.

I'm sure the Carribean schools got to be a blast

I think it would kind of suck to go to dental school in the Caribbean... considering there aren't any...

However, if you dropped $300K to hang out in the Caribbean for four years and tell people you were going there for dental school... I bet you could have a LOT of fun!

- Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold the phone here!

- First off, starting dental school often means moving to a new city where you don't know anyone. A social program set up within a school is a valuble way to help people get a kickstart to their new life.

- By no means are we saying that you have to be involved in these activities, but the option to do so is a great asset to a school.

- Often the a social club is student run and not the faculty holding your hand.

- "The point is, fun is what you make of it. There is no singular category of fun" - If you say this then why are you making fun of people who think going to footbal games or six flags is fun? (A little hipocritical maybe?)

- Now this is my opinion, so don't flame me for this, but I think your going to make a better dentist if you learn to be social. You can have awesome handskills and be the smartest guy in class, but if you don't have good patient management you won't be a good dentist (at least in the eyes of your patients). Sure, you can learn to do this on your own, but having student run social activities can't hurt.

Yeah you're awesome. Who doesn't want a free trip to Six Flags?

it's all about work/life balance. Just because I am going to 'professional' school, doesn't mean I have to be an uptight stiff that eats/breathes/sleeps dentistry 24/7. Different strokes for different folks, but if you are not enjoying school, then you are probably doing it wrong.

To the OP, I think UoP is a fun school.

When I was choosing schools, I knew all of my top choices were academically and clinically excellent, but it was the 'warm' atmosphere at UoP that put it as my top choice. Staff/faculty/students treat each other kindly and we get respected as colleagues. For me, being treated kindly, and viewed as a colleague, makes sense. D-school is intense, and anything that helps reduce stress is welcome.

Students at UoP like to have fun, whether it be having a few drinks after a tough week or participating in a school sponsored event.

Just yesterday, as fulfilment of his campaign promise, our class president presented a music/dance video he put together. It was goofy and provided a great laugh, which was great for relieving stress at the end of an intense academic week that will be followed by another just like it, only harder.

Harvard d school students definitely have a lot of fun. I have experienced that 2 days ago😀

LMAO this is hilarious. One person starts a topic about a very casual subject and immediately a million gunners chime in to shut him down. LOL its not an exam kids, its okay to have a little fun.

To quote family guy...

Dad : WHY YOU NO DOCTAH YET?!?!
Son : Dad, I'm twelve.
Dad : TALK TO ME WHEN YOU DOCTAH!!!

at 6/6 of the interviews ive been to so far, the students have specifically mentioned all of the things that they do for fun. Sober and not. you guys are crazy and make me fear dental school for the risk that i will be associated with students like you. relax. have fun.

Clinical = Fun :idea:

Therefore, all schools are fun👍...except Harvard👎

haha, I saw that video cause your class pres is a good friend of mine. I got a good laugh out of it even though I didnt get most of the inside jokes!

first year is fun... you have your fun in sim lab til it closes... prepping projects due the next day and mounting casts for practicals.

and six flags was fun btw. 🙂 free food + rides for $15 + beer.... how could you not have fun???? 😉

this is professional school, grow up

actually from walking in and out of our local dental school, I have seen many flyers over the past few years that have advertised fun activities...from the school, god forbid a school tries to make their students have fun together and be happy. happy dental students=motivated dental students=good dentists

We have a ton of fun in our class... sure the gunners are there, but even they come out and hang out (even if they don't want to drink). Believe me, after some of these weeks, you're gonna want a beer

Being at a school with a top 10 football team helps the fun too 😉

:xf:its nice that you know that you're getting in for sure 👍

Heaven forbid someone be confident about gaining admissions. And you should see a surgeon about that stick problem you have, it can't be comfortable.

BTW thanks to the OP who pasted that link of the UoP vs. UCSF drink-a-thon. I got a chuckle out of it.
